Members of EGB played an important part in the first of two research workshops organised through the SDC, a consortium bringing together Danish universities and the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS). The workshop, considering patterns of trade and investment as well as broader questions such as “decoupling” and “deglobalization” involved scholars from Europe, China and Japan and took place on the UCAS campus outside of Beijing. The papers included studies of the role of state financialization in accelerating technological innovation in China, the take-up (or non take-up) of the tariff preferences provided by free trade agreements, cooperation between Japan and China in third country markets, and the digital silk road. The workshop also provided an opportunity for researchers to meet up with MSc students taking the SDC’s graduate programme, Public Management and Social Development. The workshop organizer, EGB’s Eddie Ashbee thanked the SDC for its generous financial and practical support that made the workshop possible and said that “this was a very successful venture exploring important economic, business, and strategic issues across Europe, the US and Asia. I very much hope that this will be the first of many more academic dialogues.”
