Guest lecture by Professor Anne-Marie Brady

China's Polar Interests

Friday, December 3, 2010 - 14:00 to 15:30

Asia Research Centre is pleased to invite you to a guest lecture by Professor Anne-Marie Brady on

China's Polar Interests

China is on the rise in Asia, Africa, North and South America, the Caribbean, the South Pacific and in Western and Eastern Europe. China's activities in the Arctic and Antarctic are part of this rise and reflect China's growing economic and political powers. In the past China's polar programmes were restricted by a lack of available funds and a lack of scientists with polar expertise. However China is now the world's second largest economy and the current global economic downturn is only accentuating China's economic importance. China has a large pool of experienced polar scientists to draw on and a network of polar research institutes nationwide. This talk discusses the range of China's activities in the polar regions as well as the motivations behind its polar interests.

Associate Professor Anne-Marie Brady is a specialist on Chinese domestic and foreign politics at the University of Canterbury, in Christchurch, New Zealand. Her books include: Looking North, Looking South: China, Taiwan, and the South Pacific (2010), Marketing Dictatorship: Propaganda and Thought Work in Contemporary China (2008), Making the Foreign Serve China: Managing Foreigners in the People's Republic of China (2003), and Friend of China--the Myth of Rewi Alley (2002). She is currently researching China's polar strategy and the politics of ethnicity in China.
