PhD defence: Niels Buus Lassen

Monday, September 18, 2023 - 13:00 to 15:00

In order to obtain the PhD degree, Niels Buus Lassen has submitted his thesis entitled:

The Predictive Power of Social Media Data

The PhD thesis contributes to the scholarly discussion on identifying the predictive power of social media and Google search data for the predictive modelling of sales and investor behaviour.

The thesis consists of a kappa and research papers with five predictive models. A model for iPhone sales using Twitter data, a model for H&M sales using Facebook data and a model for Mikkeller beer sales using Facebook
and Google search data. A general model for predictions based on social media and Google search data.
Lastly a predictive model for investor behaviour using Google search data. The key contributions propose a
new conceptual Social Filtering Model, explaining how human behaviour on social media and Google searches
are filtered differently. This determines the potential use for data in a new Predictive Modelling Framework.
