In 2021-2022 Professor Niels Mygind performed research for a Government Commission on Democratic Companies. Mygind’s part of the research was to analyze how countries with the highest prevalence of employee-owned companies had overcome the barriers for employee ownership. By using his international network of leading researchers in the area he organized research teams in France, Italy, Spain (including Mondragon), the UK, and the US.

Mygind wrote a summary report: ”Medarbejdereje i Frankrig, Italien, Spanien, UK og USA” – for the Ministry of Business This summary was based on 224 pages reports on the mentioned countries written by 16 leading researchers in the field. Mygind coordinated and structured the work including collection of data and final editing.

The country reports were later revised and updated and have now been published in two special issues of Journal of Participation and Employee Ownership, guest-edited by Mygind together with Professor Joseph Blasi and Professor Douglas Kruse, both from Rutgers University, USA.

Special issues: Overcoming barriers for employee ownership, part 1 & 2, 2023, Vol. 6, no. 2 & 3

The last issue includes Mygind’s overview article and a concluding article about policy implications:

Overcoming barriers of employee ownership in France, Italy, Spain, the UK and the US

Three models of employee ownership: Worker cooperative, EOT and ESOP – overcoming barriers – important choices – pros and cons
