Few question the proposition that Donald Trump has overturned accepted norms and policies. In particular foreign policy seems to have been upended as former foes have been embraced and traditional allies such as Denmark have been left wondering what the future brings.

In their article for Global Affairs, Eddie Ashbee of EGB and Steven Hurst ask if all of this is a momentary ‘blip’ or a transformational shift in the character of US foreign policy that will have far-reaching consequences for Europeans.

Ashbee and Hurst explore the ways in which the concept of a policy ‘transformation’ has developed within the social sciences and on this basis argue that there has been a proto-transformational change that will have a lasting impact on the US and global relationships.
