What do children actually get out of going to school?

Invitation to press conference

02/23/2007

At a press conference on March 9th at Moltkes Palæ Professor of Pediatrics Mads Hermansen will be presenting the result of the research project “An investigation into the culture of school with regard to discipline, academic benefit of the classes and collaboration”. A project supported with DKK 2,239,000 by the Rockwool Foundation.

“What do children actually get out of going to school? Why is there often so much noise in the classroom? What is the teacher’s role in the students’ learning? These are common questions parents and politicians ask about school – and the press conference will reveal a couple of answers,” Project Manager Mads Hermansen says.

5000 children and 200 teachers have participated

The project has set up a knowledge-based background for discussions about noise and bullying and the connection between what the teachers do and what the students get out of it. 5000 children and app. 200 teachers have participated in the investigation. “The result shows that the good teacher does make a difference, but it is also very important to raise the quality of what goes on, so that learning is maximized and the noise and discontentment is minimized,” Mads Hermansen says.

Two important players in this field will comment on the result of the research project at the press conference: Minister for Education Bertel Haarder (V) and MP Margrethe Vestager (RV).
