New elective course is succeeding in creating jobs

03/02/2006

A new elective course for graduate students is succeeding in preparing the students to the business world – 1/3 of all participants were offered a job after having completed the trainee period.

Important work experience

“A number of inquires, i.e. from Dansk Industri, indicate that graduates from universities and institutes of higher education are lacking an understanding of business. They have a good understanding of their own study field, but they lack a view of the complexity which exists in a company. That is the reason for the establishment of the elective “Student Consultant”, which gives the students relevant work experience and an opportunity to test their theoretical knowledge in the “real” world. The traineeship paves the way for the practical work experience, which is extremely important, when the graduates are applying for their first job”, says Sven Junghagen, Director, CBS Graduate School.

A hands-on experience

Dorthe Bjerring, CBS graduate student, is among the 30% who were offered a job in the trainee company. She has been attached to the company Ferle, a drug-test producer, and she has learned many things during her stay: “I really feel that I am using my theoretical training in practise, and it feels good to be able to contribute with my knowledge. I would not have experienced this with a traditional elective, I think it has been a successful, hands-on experience”, says Dorthe Bjerring.

The programme “Student Consultants” is available at CBS from the Autumn 2005.

Last year the following companies participated: AA International Consulting, CapGemini, Coloplast, Consensus Management, DELC, DTU – Afdelingen for Forskning og Innovation, Enemærke& Petersen, Energy Consulting Network, Ferle, Gaia Solar, Kiranto foods, Kommunernes Revision, PBJ Consult, Piaster, SEAS-NVE, Secunia, spd-dk, Zoomio Holding.
