Business managers have to learn the right speech

CBS, Dansk Erhverv, Jyllandsposten and the rhetorical consulting firm Rhetor hold a conference about rhetoric in the Danish business world on 20 November, 2007. The pulse of the Danish top managers’ rhetorical competences will be measured and the award for Business Speaker of the Year 2007 will be given.

- We hold this conference, because we find it important to keep an eye on the way that managerial messages are conveyed, so that they are action-oriented and practical and understandable for the employees. There are many examples of strategies in businesses that are never implemented, because the message is not clear enough, says Jesper Troels Jensen, Administrative Director of Rhetor.

He emphasises that modern managers have to live up to tough demands for charisma and rhetorical abilities in order to communicate convincingly with the customers, investors and employees.

Academic input from CBS

From CBS Jonas Gabrielsen participates and, together with Finn Frandsen from Handelshøjskolen in Århus, he will supply the academic input on the importance of rhetoric in the business world.

- The rhetorical tradition is not ancient Greek concepts and Latin terms. It has something to teach us in terms of how to appear trustworthy, how to share understanding and engagement with the audience, how to grab and make the most of the verbal space and how to ensure that the message remains clear, also after the speech – all in all these are qualities that are increasingly important to the modern business manager, says Jonas Gabrielsen.

At the conference you can also hear the top bosses Alfred Josefsen from Irma and Jesper Brøckner from Telia talk about their work with rhetoric in their businesses. The American keynote-speaker David Murray from Ragan Communications will speak about rhetoric and business life in the world’s leading rhetorical nation.
