"Courting Chaos: Singapore's Pursuit of the Creative Industries"

By Can Seng Ooi, Associate Professor, CBS

Friday April 7, 14.00-15.30

CBS - Kilen - Kilevej 14A, Lecture Hall K.146

For the last decade, Singapore, like many other countries, has been developing its creative industries, namely, arts and culture, design and media. While the latter two are perceived as economically lucrative, cultural development is argued to be needed to nourish the creative spirit of Singaporeans. A vibrant art scene is also seen as necessary to attract foreign skilled workers who are members of the creative class.

Creative activities however have their quirks and dangers. In the context of a soft-authoritarian regime in Singapore, creative expressions can pose some challenges. For instance, while wanting to nurture the film industry in Singapore, the authorities have banned some locally made political films.

This presentation goes behind the promotional materials offered by the authorities, and  examine the successes and challenges faced by Singapore in its courting of chaos through the creative industries.

Can Seng Ooi is Singaporean, a sociologist by training and working as an Associate Professor in Copenhagen Business School. He is also a member of imagine.. and the director of the university's master programme in international business.
