Democratic processes in Latin America

Programme:

Marió Velazquez (Colegio de Sonora, Mexico)
Social movements and their influence on the development of the democratic processes in Latin America.

Mario Velázquez holds a Ph.D in Sociology from el Colegio de México, where he has studied social movements and their use and abuse of resources in negotiations with the nation state. Mario Velázquez also has an MA in Public Policy from el Colegio Mexiquense and a BA in Sociology from UNAM in Mexico. He has won several prizes in Mexico for his research.

Helene Balslev Clausen (CSA)
Everyday forms of democracy

Helene Balslev Clausen is currently a Ph.D student at the CBS Centre of the Study of the Americas; her project is a study of North American migration to Mexico. Helene has spent the past four years in Mexico working among other things as a researcher at Colegio de Sonora and at the Centro Regional de Investigación Multidisciplinaria i Cuernavaca. Helene has published several articles about migration from Mexico to the USA and vice versa, focusing on the construction of transnational social space by the immigrants. Her paper will discuss of micro politics in Mexico in relation to the Partido Revolucionario Institutcional.

Steen Fryba Christensen (University of Aalborg)
Two political lefts in Latin America?

Steen Fryba Christensen is an Assistant Professor of Spanish at the University of Aalborg. His research is mainly concerned with Latin American economics, politics and international relations. Steen Fryba's Ph.D. dissertation was about economic policies in Argentina and Brazil 1990-2001. In his paper, Steen Fryba will discuss the hypothesis that there are two political lefts in Latin America; he will suggest and discuss various ways of categorizing these factions with a focus on the differences between them e.g. in relation to foreign policy and their relationship with the US.

Niels Lindvig (Danish Radio)
Current political developments in Latin America

Niels Lindvig is a journalist and editor at Danish Radio. Niels Lindvig will talk about some of the many current developments in Latin American politics, including the great variety of movements on the left. He will also discuss the role of the media - local as well as international - in presenting political issues in the region.

All the papers will be in English but it will be possible to ask questions in Spanish.
