Prof. Walter W. Powell is the most well known researcher in the area of organization and management of the biotechnology industry. He has written several articles on management of networks within biotech. His current research interest lies within the interface between science and business in the Life Science industries where he investigates the transfer and circulation of managerial practices in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Professor Powell is professor of Education and Sociology of Organizational Behavior and Communication at Stanford University where he also directs the Scandinavian Consortium on Organizational Research (SCANCOR). He works in the areas of social networks and economic sociology. He is particularly interested in the processes through which knowledge is transferred from research universities into commercial development by start up firms, and the role of networks in facilitating and hindering innovations processes.
