A British psychology professor has measured the walking pace in 34 cities worldwide and Copenhagen is the second fastest after Singapore.

City life in Copenhagen is faster than in metropolises such as New York and London. Actually only Singapore is faster than the Danish Capital shows a survey by professor Richard Wiseman who carries out scientific surveys of everyday phenomena according to Berlingske Tidende.

Wiseman claims that pedestrians’ pace is a reliable measurement for the pulse of a city and the pace in the world’s cities has increased by 10 per cent on the average since 1990 when the walking pace was last measured.

The experiment was carried out on 22 August 2006 in 34 cities in the entire world during the hours of 11.30 a.m. and 2.00 p.m. local time.

Researchers secretly measured how much time 35 women and men spent on walking 60 feet the equivalent of 18.3 meter. People with large shopping bags and people talking on their cell phones were not included.

Singapore turned out to be the fastest city as on the average people walked this distance in 10 seconds. Copenhagen is marginally slower whereas Madrid in Spain and Guangzhou in China and Dublin in Ireland are following closely.

The slowliest cities in the world are Blantyre in Malawi, Manama in Bahrain, Bern in Switzerland and Cardiff in Wales.
