New research within the media food chain

- In the news media battle, who is stealing what from whom in order to be the first with the latest?

Who is stealing what from whom?

How do the individual media types contribute to the total news production? How is news journalism moving back and forth between sources, the daily press, web media, radio, television and news consumers? What kind of flow is going on between the media in the form of borrowing, stealing and other types of mutual inspiration?

The answers to these questions may be used strategically to qualify the media business models, and they will be answered by means of a comprehensive research project about the journalistic food chain in autumn 2008.

Week 46: All news material is up for registration

Professor Anker Brink Lund from CBS International Center for Business and Politics will be in charge of the actual inquiry, and the analysis will take place in week 46. All news material from Danish media houses is going to be identified and registered regardless of platform. 50 students will concurrently perform field studies of mass media news desks in order to document editorial prioritisation and reuse.

Furthermore, an international comparison of selected European media markets is included.

The significance of new media

The research project picks up the thread from a similar analysis of the news stream performed in week 46 in 1999. The new data material makes it possible to compare with previous results, and in that way obtain a picture of the development over time. And it is safe to say that the picture shows some crucial differences between then and now.

”News coverage via the internet and national freebie papers was only budding in 1999. Therefore they were not independent analysis objects at the time, but now they are key focal points. The question is if the new media has pivotally changed the news supply, or if the user fee-supported news desks of the daily press are still providing the majority of the news material", says Anker Brink Lund.

The project is carried out in cooperation with The Danish Newspaper Publishers’ Association, The Association of the Danish Specialized Press and a number of other media companies.
