Focus on research in ERP systems

The highly profiled research foundation, Højteknologifonden, has granted 12.9 million DKK to the ‘3gERP – Third Generation Enterprise Ressource Planning’ project at the Department of Informatics at CBS.

The project will contribute to developing a global ERP-system for smalle and medium sized companies. ERP-systems integrate accounting, production, sales, logistics and human ressource systems and constitute the backbone of IT-systems of any organisation

The ambition is to develop an ERP-system, which can be implemented with a substantially lower ‘total cost of ownership’ than we see today. The new research will additionally make the Danish IT industry world leading within development of these systems.

The backbone of IT systems

“ERP-systmes are central to any organization, and one can say that the IT-vendor, who delivers the ERP-system, in reality, sets the standard for the use of IT in any organization. The market today is dominated by SAP and Oracle covering roughly 50% of the market, while the other half is divided on many hundred of smaller vendors, one of which is Microsoft Business Solutions having about 3% of the world market”,  explains Professor Niels Bjørn-Andersen from the Department of Informatics.

The project will be carried out in close coorporation with a number of development departments within Microsoft Business Solutions, first and foremost in Vedbæk, but also in Fargo, North Dakota, and in Redmond, Washington, USA. The full size of the project is approximately 32 million over a 4 year period.

The research institutions are first and foremost Department of Informatics at CBS and the department of Computer Science at CopenhagenUniversity. Furthermore, two other leading European business schools, ESADE Barcelona and Said Business School Oxford, will also be involved.
