Abstract
In this talk, Stéphanie Dameron will explore what it means to be a strategist as the strategy decision-making tends to be more inclusive and participative. Building on interviews with strategy practitioners, Stéphanie Dameron argues that strategizing is the art of balancing tension : the social tension, the focus tension, the cognitive tension and the time tension. These tensions compose a paradox lens of strategizing that combines a strategy perspective with what Stéphanie Dameron calls an “antestrategy” conception of strategy work. Stéphanie borrows from Boje’s work on antenarratives to develop the concept of antestrategy. In this approach, strategy formulation is viewed as a retrospective rationalization of speculative activities, making such betting look rational and plausible so that others buy into them which in turn help the strategic content to become real.

Brief Biography
Stéphanie Dameron is professor of strategy at Paris Dauphine University where she runs the Chair « Strategic and Competitive Intelligence » and the research group in “Management & Organization”. Her research topics include cooperative relationships within or between organizations and the participation of various stakeholders in the decision making process. She also has a special interest for the management education system and managerial innovations. Her work has been published in international journals including the Journal of Management Studies and the British Journal of Management.
Institutionally engaged, she is member of the board of Paris-Dauphine University and the chair of the Advisory board of EM Normandie Business School. She is member of the scientific committee of the EURAM. She was also an IG leaders at the Strategic Management Society.
The Future of Management Education is her latest book, published in 2018.
