Brave New World – The Future Challenges for Container Shipping

A recent report, published jointly by TT Club and McKinsey & Company, outlines four scenarios for the container shipping industry and discusses how the industry may ensure value creation over the next 25 years. On 22 October 2018, CBS Maritime in collaboration with TT Club and McKinsey & Company hosts a session to continue the discussion on the future challenges for container transport.

The report is entitled `Brave new world? Container transport in 2043´ and is based on interviews with 30 industry leaders with many years of experience working within the container industry.
From the interviews are derived five broad conclusions as to where the container shipping industry is going, and on this basis the report examines potential future scenarios – two of which focus on digitalization and two on trade development – and their implications.

“We hope to continue the discussion and to also help bring forward possible alternative views on the future challenges together with research-based perspectives on the strategic development for container shipping companies necessary for meeting the challenges,” says director of CBS Maritime, Henrik Sornn-Friese.

In supplement to the findings of the above report, Marc Levinson, author of  "The Box. How the Shipping Container Made the World Smaller and the World Economy Bigger”, will reflect on the past, present and future of container shipping. Marc Levinson is an economist, historian and journalist specialized in trade and economics, international finance and financial regulation, transportation and energy. He has published widely in journals such as Harvard Business Review and Foreign Affairs. He is currently senior fellow in international business at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.

The session will end with a paneled discussion, including the three speakers and introducing viewpoints from inside the industry: Niels Smedegaard (DFDS), Christopher Rex (Danish Ship Finance) and Morten Bo Christiansen (AP Moller-Maersk).

“We look much forward to the event and are happy to be hosting it here at Copenhagen Business School (CBS). CBS Maritime is continuously engaged in leading maritime research and education and we aim to bring forward solid evidence and challenging perspectives and to engage closely with the industry and leading sector analysts,” says Henrik Sornn-Friese.

Note that the event is free of charge however, registration is mandatory. Registration closes 16 October 2018.
