State-owned enterprises and the challenges of Chinese authoritarian capitalism

Seminar with James McGregor, Greater China Chairman for APCO Worldwide

Friday, April 25, 2014 - 14:30 to 16:00

In three decades China has risen to an economic powerhouse which according to the IMF will overtake the US as the world’s largest economy by 2016. China’s economic rise has challenged the Western dominated global economic architecture, as it seems to indicate the comparative advantage of state capitalism or authoritarian capitalism. However the limits of Chinese authoritarian capitalism are increasingly evident. Even though new reform policies have been adopted, crucial issues such as reform of the SOEs, the vanguard of Chinese authoritarian capitalism have not been fully addressed. In his talk James McGregor discusses the key characteristics of the so-called China model and its impact on global business.

James McGregor is Greater China Chairman for APCO Worldwide, and author of two highly regarded books: No Ancient Wisdom, No Followers: The Challenges of Chinese Authoritarian Capitalism, published in October 2012, and One Billion Customers: Lessons from the Front Lines of Doing Business in China, published in 2005. He has lived in China for more than two decades, and can speak and read Chinese. He was an active member of the Board of Governors of the American Chamber of Commerce in China (AmCham) for nearly a decade and is currently chairman of the U.S. Government Relations Committee for AmCham.
