Maritime Technology and Business Development Conference

This TINV/CBS Maritime conference addresses a number of key challenges and opportunities for companies in the maritime industry, with a focus on innovation

Thursday, March 31, 2016 - 08:30 to 15:15

The development of new products and services to accommodate the rapidly changing requirements of shipping and the offshore industry has become a key competitive factor for marine equipment suppliers. However, key economic and political processes pertaining to globalization, growth and consolidation, new legislation, and increasingly complex organizations have made product and service innovation increasingly difficult.

This conference aims to facilitate innovation through knowledge sharing of best practices, and will examine how product and service innovation in the maritime supply industry can be strengthened despite the many challenges. The speakers are researchers on innovation, industry participants from various nodes in the global maritime supply chain, and representatives from different industry associations.

-    Development of new products and services is extremely important for Danish Maritime suppliers. By bringing together researchers, suppliers, customers, and industry associations we want to examine how the industry can continue to be competitive in the years to come, says Thomas Roslyng Olesen from CBS Maritime.

Focus on three different approaches to innovation:
Regulation and innovation
In the past years, the increase in environmental regulations has created a new market for eco-innovation. In connection with this new market, the companies face new challenges within risk management, as the legislation tends to lack considerably behind market developments. It is therefore interesting to look at what challenges arise when companies pursue innovation betting on future regulations, and how to deal with these uncertainties.

Joint innovation
Joint innovation projects have historically been extremely important for marine equipment suppliers, especially for Danish marine equipment suppliers who typically cater to the complex, higher value-added segments of the market. However, the globalization and consolidation of the industry have made these joint innovations projects increasingly difficult. Therefore, we need to discuss how we can facilitate the development of joint innovation projects today and in the future.

Innovation and servitization
Servitization has become a keyword for most manufacturing companies in high-income countries, when it comes to their ability to differentiate from competitors. In this regard, technological and organizational innovations are key factors. However, the maritime industry is different from many other industries, and we will therefore discuss what it takes for marine equipment suppliers to become service-enhanced companies today and in the future.
