Marc

Meet Marc, a student from BSc in International Shipping and Trade

Why did I choose my programme?
I chose International Shipping and Trade because of my interest in logistics and how it connects the world. I've been fascinated by vehicles like airplanes, ships, and trains since I was young. I wanted to learn more about transportation and trade, so I looked for a programme that would allow me to do so. I found the International Shipping and Trade programme to be a perfect fit. The programme is tailored to the industry through specific courses. The programme structure, including the mandatory exchange and internship, also caught my attention.

What do I like the best?
There are many aspects of the programme that I like, but the most prominent ones are probably the mandatory exchange, the social life, the shipping-related courses, and the close connection we have to the industry. This connection is evident through numerous company visits and guest lectures.

What do I think is difficult?
The quarter structure can be tough in the beginning, especially if you're not a super fast learner like myself. Although there are some advantages, such as only having two courses at a time and quickly moving on to new topics, I found it challenging when struggling with a course that had to be learned in a short period. After the first two quarters, I figured out the rhythm of the programme. It became easier to structure my studying for exams, know when to take it easy, and so on.

What would I have liked to have known before starting my programme?
I would have liked to know the amount of math required, because it really caught me off guard. I'm not very good at math myself, so some of the courses have been quite tough for me. However, it is definitely not impossible if you're not the best at math, and it's still doable.

What do I want to do after finishing my programme?
After completing my bachelor's degree, I may pursue a master's degree, though I haven't made a final decision. In terms of my career goals, I envision myself working for a shipping company in their operations department. I am excited to take on the day-to-day challenges of optimising fleet operations and implementing the academic knowledge I have gained to make a difference in the industry. Additionally, I have a strong desire to work abroad and see the world while working in a field that I love.

If I could give myself a piece of advice, before starting it would be…
I would advise my past self not to waste energy on things that are beyond my control. Instead, I would encourage myself to be patient and relish this new chapter in life. It's perfectly fine not to have all the answers from the get-go, as nobody expects that of you. Embrace challenges as they arise and take pride in knowing that you gave it your all.
