CBS Honorary Doctor Miriam Shlesinger

in memoriam

15/11/2012

It is with great sorrow that we have received information that Professor Miriam Shlesinger, Bar Ilan University, Israel, died of lung cancer on 10 November, aged 65. In 2001, CBS awarded her an honorary doctorate in recognition of her outstanding contribution to interpreting and translation studies. This led to her making many subsequent visits to CBS, all of which were characterised by her inspiring generosity. In 2007, in further acknowledgement of her work, CBS took the initiative of publishing a well-deserved Festschrift in her honour, Interpreting Studies and Beyond. During her stays at CBS, Miriam always insisted on ‘earning her keep’ by guest lecturing, collaborating on research projects, running seminars, and eagerly and enthusiastically sharing knowledge with students and faculty in Dalgas Have. Here, she said, she felt as close to heaven as she would ever get. We are grateful for having known her and will always cherish and honour the memory of a wonderful colleague.
