Title:

Coping with a turbulent environment through technological learning: The case of combinatorial chemistry.

Abstract:

This paper is concerned with the ways in which 520 small and medium sized firms with a competence in combinatorial chemistry have been able to cope with a turbulent environment through technological learning. Using a combination of publication, company and industry data, it shows that these firms, far from simply focusing on their valuable, non-imitable and non-substitutable resources and competences, reacted to enhance, expand and/or renew their competences along the evolving technology, competition and demand through internal and external learning. Evidence suggests that these strategies contributed to their success in terms of survival and growth.
