Designed for Digital: How to Architect your Business for Sustained Success
To compete in the digital economy, established companies must take advantage of digital technologies to deliver both operational excellence and rapid business innovation. But operational excellence and business innovation impose very different design requirements on companies. These different requirements are driving two business transformations—we refer to these transformations as digitized versus digital. The authors have examined how companies define their people, process, and technology to take advantage of the capabilities of digital technologies.
The authors will engage in a Q&A panel discussion about their research on digital transformations and provide a forum to engage with questions from participants. Join us for an in-depth discussion of the opportunities and challenges that digitized and digital are presenting.

About the panel
Until her retirement in July 2020, Jeanne was a Principal Research Scientist at The MIT Center for Information Systems Research (MIT CISR). She joined MIT CISR in 1993 as a principal research scientist, and was director of the center from 2008 to 2016. Her research advanced the field of enterprise architecture and examined how companies designed themselves for success in the digital economy. In particular, she studied how companies effectively implement the capabilities offered by new technologies like social, mobile, analytics, cloud, Internet of Things, and cognitive computing. Jeanne coauthored four books, and her work has appeared in major practitioner and academic journals, including MIT Sloan Management Review, Harvard Business Review, The Wall Street Journal, MIS Quarterly Executive, MIS Quarterly, and CIO Magazine. She is a founding senior editor and former editor-in-chief of MIS Quarterly Executive.
Cynthia Beath (Professor Emerita at the University of Texas, McCombs School of Business) is a co-author of Designed for Digital (2019). Before embarking on her academic career, Cynthia worked in private industry in several information systems development and consulting positions. Cynthia received her B.A. from Duke University and her M.B.A. and Ph.D. Degrees from UCLA. Currently she is conducting research on how organizations design themselves for the digital era.
Martin Mocker is a professor of information systems at ESB Business School, Reutlingen University, Germany and a Research Affiliate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His teaching and research focus on the digital transformations of large, traditional companies aiming to stay competitive in an increasingly digital economy. Professor Mocker’s research has appeared in leading academic and management journals including Harvard Business Review, Sloan Management Review, Management Information Systems Quarterly and the European Journal for Information Systems. Martin also serves as a senior editor for MIS Quarterly Executive. Together with Jeanne W. Ross and Cynthia M. Beath, Martin has co-authored the book “Designed for Digital: How to Architect Your Business for Sustained Success”. Before joining academia, Martin worked at McKinsey & Company addressing strategic IT challenges of senior executives. He holds a doctoral degree from the University of Muenster and a degree in computer science from the University of Dortmund, Germany.
