State, context and correspondence: Policy analysis in historical materialism’s research program

In the article “State, context and correspondence. Contours of a historical-materialist policy analysis”, (Österreichische Zeitschrift für Politikwissenschaft, 42:4 (2013), 425-442) Ulrich Brand engages in a critical theoretical discussion with policy analysis through a dual critique. On one hand against the overly functionalist approach to policy analysis found in much state theory, and on the other hand against simplified and un-contextualized understandings of the state found in much policy analysis. This opens a productive field for contextualized policy studies and a richer and more nuanced state theory. In the seminar Brand will present and discuss this intervention.

Ulrich Brand is Professor of Political Science at University of Vienna.
