English functions frequently as an organisational language in international workplaces, both officially and unofficially. Research has demonstrated that the organisational status of languages may rest on employee ideas about language rather than formal guidelines. In order to study the underlying mechanisms of this process, this dissertation investigates the ideological foundations and legitimation of English as an organisational language in a corporate setting. Furthermore, to map the implications of English as an organisational language for employees, the empirical work also assesses the role of English proficiency in inter-employee evaluations in an international academic workplace. A critical realist framework inspires the theorisation of the results of the two empirical approaches.
