Asia Research Centre invites you to a guest lecture with Professor Deepak Nayyar, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi:

Economic development in India and China: A tale of two countries

This lecture analyses the economic performance of India and China during the second half of the twentieth century, situated in a longer term historical perspective, to explore the similarities and differences in their development experience.

First, it considers the changes in their significance in the world economy, from 1870 to 2000, in comparison with other parts of the world.Second, it seeks to focus on the period since 1950, to examine their performance in terms of economic growth, as compared with Asia, other regions of the developing world, the industrialized countries and the world economy. Third, it outlines the dramatic changes in perceptions, not always consistent with the realities, about economic development in India since independence and in China after the revolution. Fourth, it explores the anatomy of these new success stories in development, to analyse the lessons from, and implications of the development experience of these two Asian giants.

In conclusion, the lecture reflects upon the nature of the relationship between outcomes in development and thinking about development.
