Chinese Economic Slowdown: Soft or Hard Landing?

Nicholas Lardy has earned a reputation as a leading expert on the Chinese economy through his current position at the Peterson Institute and his former affiliations with the Brookings Institution, Yale University, as well as other important academic institutions. This lecture will be based on one of his most recent books “China: The Balance Sheet”, which has obtained substantial international attention and recognition. It deals with China’s accelerating integration into the world economy and addresses issues related to the dynamic change processes, which are taking place in China today.

In addition, the seminar will deal with future scenarios for China’s role in the world economy in the era of global recession and Lardy will supply with observations on China's exposure to the current global financial crisis.

Nicholas R. Lardy is a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. He joined the Institute in March 2003 from the Brookings Institution, where he was a senior fellow in the Foreign Policy Studies Program. Lardy has written numerous articles and books on the Chinese economy. Lardy’s most recent books are China's Rise: Challenges and Opportunities (2008) and China: The Balance Sheet (Public Affairs, 2006) to which he contributed chapters on China’s domestic economy and China in the world economy. Lardy is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and is a member of the editorial boards of the China Quarterly, Journal of Asian Business,China Review, and China Economic Review.
