Robert Strand’s article “CSR & Culture: Embracing the Scandinavian Approach to CSR” was published within the Børsen Ledelseshåndbøger series on Corporate Social Responsibility (www.borsenforum.com/CSR) this month. Robert’s piece, which was translated into Danish, offers a comparison between the “American approach to CSR” and the “Scandinavian approach to CSR”. Robert, an American, argues that the American approach is exemplified by the Porter & Kramer (2006) Harvard Business Review article on strategic CSR that advocates a stripping ethics from CSR, and that the American approach is threatening the Scandinavian approach to CSR which has the ethics and stakeholder engagement at its core. Robert suggests that the Scandinavian approach to CSR is a “cooperative advantage” for Scandinavia that will be a long term competitive advantage for the region as corporations are increasingly facing CSR challenges that demand partnerships with NGO’s and other third parties to effectively address.
