Seminar with Professor Chris Mathieu, Lund University

'Artistic practices over the career cycle in filmmaking'

The talk focuses on applying practice theory (Schatzki, Gherardi, MacIntyre) to work in film making. By looking at practices over the career cycle we examine how particular individuals' practices develop over time and in varying environments.

We thus look at the learning, refinement and development of practices, as well as their practical accomplishment and meaning to the practicing individuals. In addition to what generally would be classified as "pure" artistic practices, that is to say the activities explicitly part of the film making process, we also look at the practices entailed in acquiring freelance work in the open labour markets that operate for most occupations in the Danish film industry.

The sample upon which the talk is based comprises over fifty contemporary Danish film workers in various occupations - directors, producers, cinematographers, editors and sound engineers.
