Much of my current work considers global relations and policymaking processes and the ways in which they shape markets and business strategies. In particular, I look at recent crises, “deglobalization” processes and policy towards the rise of China in both Europe and the United States. My recent publications have assessed US policy responses to China’s Belt & Road Initiative and the UK’s 2015 decision to join the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).

At the same time, I study the rise of conservative populism and nationalism, and the implications of all these trends for economic and social policy, politics, markets and business. Should, for example, the Brexit vote and Donald Trump’s political ascendancy be regarded as aberrations or a harbinger of things to come?

What frameworks do I employ? For the most part, my work takes theoretical frameworks and approaches used in the study of domestic policymaking and explores the ways in which they can be used, adapted or modified in foreign policy analysis. Questions of policy continuity, policy change and understandings of “feedback” processes loom large.

How am I getting all this across? Academic publications and conference presentations aside I also publish commentaries on contemporary political issues (particularly within the UK and US) and have given interviews to many media outlets including DR2, TV2 News, the BBC World Service, Politiken, Information, Weekendavisen, and Jyllands-Posten. I also give presentations and join debates for organisations such as the British Chamber of Commerce in Denmark and at events such as Folkemødet on Bornholm.

I was Program Director of the BSc and MSc International Business & Politics (IBP) for six years. I am now convenor of the EGB research cluster considering Global Shifts, Emerging Markets and the Rise of Asia, sit of the CBS PhD Committee and serve as EGB’s PhD coordinator. In mid-2024 I was appointed Head of the MSc Public Management & Social Development program at the Sino-Danish Center for Education and Research.

What projects are underway at the moment? My book, Countering China: US Policy and the Belt & Road Initiative was published in 2023 and my study of Deglobalization in 2024. Alongside a range of articles, I am working (with Steve Hurst) on a further book project:  Donald Trump and the Transformation of US Foreign Policy
