Nationalism in Asia at the Age of Globalization

Guest lecture with Chiharu Takenaka, Professor at the College of Law and Politics at Rikkyo University

Monday, April 7, 2014 - 14:00 to 15:30

On April 7, Asia Research Centre is organizing the guest lecture 'Nationalism in Asia at the Age of Globalization: the Case of India from a Comparative Perspective' with Professor Chiharu Takenaka, the College of Law and Politics at Rikkyo University.

Nationalism has been an effective political tool to fight the rulers as well as to build up and strengthen nation-states for more than two centuries. When the waves of nationalism spread to Asia, Japan followed the path of western powers, while most of the Asian nations emerged in the process of decolonization. Nation-states today, however, seem to be squeezed between the tides of globalization and the activities from grassroots. Chiharu Takenaka analyzes the unique dynamics of nationalism in India, the largest democracy and one of the fastest growing economies in the world, from a comparative perspective.

Chiharu Takenaka is Professor at the College of Law and Politics, Rikkyo University, President of Japan Association for Asian Studies and Vice-President of the Peace Studies Association of Japan. She specializes in International Politics, South Asian Studies and Gender Studies. Her writings include Why are there always Fights in the World? To Untie the Chain of Violence (Tokyo, 2004) and The Bandit History of India: Empire, the State and Outlaws (Tokyo, 2010). She has translated the earlier works of Subaltern Studies in Subaltern History: Deconstructing Indian History (Tokyo, 1998).
