Global Work & Life Conversations: ‘societal participation of international talents’ & ‘the role of English language at work’
Join the conversation amongst a panel of researchers and practitioners debating the illusion of “glamourous global life & work” and implications for business, society and future research.
Welcome and introduction by Kerstin Martel and Ivan O. Vulchanov, both PhD candidates at CBS, Dpt. of Management, Society & Communication and researchers on the Horizon2020 project GLOMO: “Global Mobility of Employees”
- Jai Patel, Head of International Mobility, Philips
- Kathy Borys Siddiqui, Founder, Active Action
- Nicolaj Lubanski, Dir. Talent Attraction, Copenhagen Capacity
- Alexandra Mol, Senior Manager HR Activiation, Philips
The intensifying international flavor of cities such as Copenhagen or Amsterdam, supported by place branding and talent attraction initiatives, seems to facilitate an "easy integration" of foreign workers. Moreover, the impression of getting along, even without speaking the local language is reinforced by corporate policies that promote English as the working language.
Nonetheless, individuals are facing challenges in engaging in purposeful activities locally or establishing social connections at work and beyond. In addition, idealistic presentations of English-speaking working environments may leave mobile individuals unprepared for the local language context. With the above as a point of departure, we will explore how leaders in Global HR and Communications envisage their organization’s role with regards to social anchoring and inclusion of so-called “internationals” / “highly qualified migrants” beyond job performance.
