MSc in Business Administration and Bioentrepreneurship
A maximum of 30 students are enrolled per year. Therefore, the students face-time with faculty is unusually high, and many students develop strong working relationships with their teachers. You will also get to know everyone in your class, which produces a good environment for working in groups and exchanging knowledge both in and outside the classroom.
The study environment offers an opportunity to train your interdisciplinary skills. Students from life-science degrees work closely with business students on assignments and projects. Initially it can be challenging for bio-students to adjust to another academic language, and to work together with students with a different mindset. But soon they realise that this is one of the most valuable aspects of their BBIP study experience.
Courses are a stimulating meeting ground for different backgrounds: Ph.D.’s, Danish and international life science bachelor and master students. CBS students and employees from the life-science industry can also attend classes by taking a minor in bioentrepreneurship or single courses as electives.
What to consider?
Meeting ground between life-science and business students
At the beginning it can be challenging for life-science students to get into the issues of business analysis and to develop a business mind-set. Some students find it challenging to read literature on management and business economics. These challenges are surmountable if you keep an open-mind towards new issues and towards fellow students with different backgrounds. You will also find it helpful to pick up as much information as possible from the rich exposure you get to experts and experience from industry.
If you consider applying for this MSc in Bioentrepreneurship, it is essential that you have an interest in the biotech industry and have a passion for entrepreneurship and business.
The combination of a small number of motivated students, and teachers who are passionate and highly recognised within their academic fields, creates a unique learning environment. As a student you are expected to prepare for and participate actively in class.The attitude and contribution of the students is the key to a good learning environment and high output.
To a large extent classes are based on co-teaching, involving both CBS and industry faculty. Courses make use of real-life case work, creating lots of interaction between students and teachers. The master programme also includes a three-month internship in a leading life-science firm. This will give you a unique mix of analytical and practical skills, and a strong background for building your career in the life science industry.
At CBS each course is concluded with an examination. The BBIP courses are quarter courses and therefore exams will take place in end-October and December/January. The thesis defense will be in June.
Three examination forms are used in the master program:
- Oral exam based on a mini-project
- Oral exam
- 4 hour written exam
- Thesis defence
Your thesis builds on the practical issues you have addressed during your internship and your BBIP entrepreneurship project.
Work, life, study balance
The programme is a full-time programme. During the second year students have a full-time teaching programme. The internship in the spring semester is also a full-time commitment (37 hours pr. week).
Combined with the value you derive from attending class, most students have difficulties finding the time for a student job. If you want to do both, prioritisation and time management are essential.
Studying in English
Before studying a programme taught in English you might want to consider the following:
- All literature, lectures, exams, projects and group work are in English
- Academic English differs from the English used in everyday language – so it might be a challenge even if you are used to speaking English in other situations.
- You may have to spend more time on reading and understanding the material in English
- You may find it challenging to express yourself with the same ease as you would in your mother tongue.
- Some will feel uncomfortable and shy when speaking English – especially when in a crowd or among native speakers.
Practice makes perfect
There is a big difference between reading and understanding texts and expressing yourself in English both orally and in writing. This is a challenge for some students. Even if you are used to reading English texts on your bachelor programme, it is still a good idea to practice your English. Try to speak it on a regular basis, watch the news, movies and TV series in English. You should also read books and newspapers in English, as this will help you read faster and increase your vocabulary. A good command of English is essential for getting the maximum learning outcome of your programme.
