MA in IBC - Intercultural Marketing (ICM)

Admission

Entry requirements

You are qualified for (but not guaranteed) admission to the programme if you:

A) Fulfil the entry requirements below
B) Fulfil the language requirement
C) Have a bachelor degree (or will by study start)

SPECIFIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The MA in International Business Communication (IBC) is the natural progression for the “BA i engelsk og organisationskommunikation” and the “BA i europæisk business – engelsk”, both from CBS. Applicants with these bachelor degrees fulfil the entry requirements for the MA IBC.

Applicants with one of the degrees mentioned above, graduating the same year as applying, are automatically qualified for and ensured admission at the programme, but not at a specific concentration and will be subject to Selection Criteria, see below.

Applicants who do not have one of the above mentioned bachelor degrees can also be qualified for the programme if the academic areas listed below are covered to a sufficient extent. Your educational background will be subject to an overall individual assessment in order to establish if the following specific entry requirements are met:

30 ECTS-points in English language studies (different from language requirement - BOTH are needed) - for more information and examples of courses see below

15 ECTS-points in total within the following areas:
(min. two out of the three must be covered with min. 5 ECTS-points each)

  • Organisation/Management (organisational theory, organisational analysis, organisational behaviour, intercultural management, international management, human resource management and the like)
  • Communication (communication theory, external communication, internal communication, organisational communication, journalism, rhetoric and the like)
  • Marketing (international marketing, introduction to marketing, strategic marketing, branding, consumer behaviour and the like).
Examples of courses that fulfil the English language studies requirement

30 ECTS-points in English Language Studies

To fulfil this requirement, you must have a thorough knowledge of the English language, demonstrated through bachelor level language studies courses. Courses merely taught in English do not fulfil this requirement. English must have been the area of study and it is important you have obtained a high level of proficiency in both written and oral English.

The following types of courses may also, to a certain extent, be included in the fulfilment of the requirement:

  • Linguistics
  • Rhetoric
  • Creative/journalistic writing (in English)
  • Language from a cultural perspective
  • English literature
  • Translation to/from English

If you are missing a maximum of 7.5 ECTS points in relevant English language courses, you may write an “English Background Assessment” where you explain how you believe you fulfill this entry requirement. This must be connected to your educational background (at bachelor level only), and clearly demonstrate how you have used this background in a relevant way. The “English Background Assessment” can be a maximum of two pages and must be supported by relevant documentation.

The "English Background Assessment" is only used in connection to fulfilment of the entry requirement and not taken into consideration in the selection process (see below for information on the selection process).

Danish language requirement

The programme requires Danish at level A.

If you have passed Danish at the A level from an upper secondary school in Denmark (ie. stx, hhx, htx, hf), you fulfil this requirement. Otherwise, the language requirements are very strict, and only the qualifications listed on the Danish level A are accepted as alternative fulfilment.

Application deadline

The programmes is only offered in the application round for group 1 applicants. See information about groups and deadlines.

English language requirement

The programme requires English at Danish level A.

The English requirements are very strict, which means that only the qualifications listed on the English level A page are accepted as alternative fulfilment.

If you do not fulfil the English requirements at the time of applying, you have until study start to document fulfilment. In other words, you are welcome to apply without fulfilling the English requirement, but you must fulfil the requirements as listed on the English level A page before study start (or 1 June if you are a non-EU citizen and need a student residence permit). If you need to take a language test/exam, your scores must be available to CBS Admissions by this time, however, you must upload a registration for the language test/exam when you apply.

SELECTION CRITERIA

The programme has a limited number of places. Only applicants fulfilling the entry requirements are considered qualified and will be considered in the selection process.

Applicants with a "BA i engelsk og organisationskommunikation” or “BA i europæisk business – engelsk” from CBS, graduating the same year as applying, are automatically qualified for and ensured admission at the programme, but not at a specific concentration and will be subject to selection criteria for the concentrations.

If there are more qualified applicants than places available at one or both of the concentrations, a selection process will take place where applicants are selected according to an overall assessment of the educational background at bachelor level, with focus on relevant courses and grades.

The following factors are of importance:

  • Broad and in-depth knowledge within each of the academic areas, both in terms of the number of ECTS-points and the diversity of courses within both of the specific entry requirements
  • Grades in courses relevant to the specific entry requirements
  • Relevance of educational background at undergraduate level, including general grade level and course content
  • Motivational essay*

*Even if you have a legal claim to MA in International Business Communication, you MUST still write a motivational essay as there is selection at the concentration.

Motivational essay:
A motivational essay must be personal and specific, and it must prove that you are well informed and have put a lot of thought into your choice of education. It should explain the purpose and the motivation of you choosing this particular degree. You should think about questions such as:

  • What can I contribute to MA IBC and my fellow students?
  • Why do I think my bachelor degree is relevant for MA IBC?
  • How do I see MA IBC as a link between my past experiences and my future career path?

Your educational background is the most important factor, however, your life and work experience may also be considered in the selection process through the motivational essay, if relevant. Your motivational essay must not exceed two A4 pages and must be written in English. Please note that the motivational essay is only used in the selection process and not in connection to the entry requirements.

Do you already have a master's degree?
Whether or not you have a Danish Master’s degree will also be considered during the selection process and will be a disadvantage in the overall assessment. Applicants with a completed Danish Master’s degree are only allowed to enrol in a new degree programme in certain circumstances (See “rules and exemptions” under "Your Application"), and this aspect of your academic background can be disadvantageous, even if you are one of the exceptions to the rule.

In case of a credit transfer of obligatory courses, we reserve the right not to use the advance assessment.
