Cand.oecon / MSc in Advanced Economics and Finance

Entry requirements

You are qualified for (but not guaranteed) admission to the programme if you:

A) Fulfil the entry requirements below
B) Fulfil the language requirement
C) Have a bachelor degree (or will by study start)

SPECIFIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Your educational background will be subject to an overall individual assessment in order to establish if the academic areas listed below are covered.

The specific entry requirements are minimum 30 ECTS-points within one or more of the following areas:

  • Economics (economic theory, micro/macro economics, international economics, monetary economics and the like)
  • Quantitative methods (statistics, econometrics, mathematics and the like)
  • Finance (corporate finance, investment analysis, international finance, derivatives and the like)

English language requirement

The programme requires English at Danish level A.

The English requirements are very strict, which means that only the qualifications listed on the English level A page are accepted as alternative fulfilment.

If you do not fulfil the English requirements at the time of applying, you have until study start to document fulfilment. In other words, you are welcome to apply without fulfilling the English requirement, but you must fulfil the requirements as listed on the English level A page before study start (or 1 June if you are a non-EU citizen and need a student residence permit). If you need to take a language test/exam, your scores must be available to CBS Admissions by this time, however, you must upload a registration for the language test/exam when you apply.

Selection Criteria

The programme has a limited number of places and admission is competitive.

Only applicants fulfilling the entry requirements are considered qualified and will be considered in the selection process.

To determine which of the qualified applicants receive an offer of admission, an overall assessment of their academic background at undergraduate level will take place.

The following factors are of importance:

  • Broad and in-depth knowledge, both in terms of the number of ECTS-points and the diversity of courses, within the following academic areas:
    1. Quantitative Methods (Econometrics and/or Financial Econometrics are of particular importance)
    2. Economics (Advanced Economic Theory and/or Industrial Organisation are of particular importance)
    3. Finance (Advanced Financial Theory and/or Financial Economics are of particular importance)
  • Relevance of educational background at undergraduate level, including general grade level and a major academic project or a dissertation/thesis with a substantial quantitative component
  • Motivation given in motivational essay

Motivational essay:

A motivational essay must be personal and specific, proving that you are well-informed and that you have put a lot of thought into your choice of education. Please consider the following when writing your motivational essay:

  • Your motivation for studying in Denmark, familiarity with Danish society and affiliation to the Danish labour market
  • Your motivation for choosing this programme, detailing your interest in quantitative economics and finance and its progression until present day
  • What you can contribute to the programme and why, considering your academic and/or extra-curricular merit within the field of quantitative economics and finance. For example, you can discuss your dissertation/thesis topic, reflect on relevant academic or professional competences acquired during your internship or student job, or illustrate the insights gained in your position as a teaching or research assistant at your home university
  • Your future plans, indicating concrete career trajectories or specific advanced academic paths, and outlining the reasoning behind your choices

Your motivational essay may not exceed two A4 pages and must be written in English.

Do you already have a master's degree?
Whether or not you have a Danish Master’s degree will also be considered during the selection process and will be a disadvantage in the overall assessment. Applicants with a completed Danish Master’s degree are only allowed to enrol in a new degree programme in certain circumstances (See the rules and regulations regarding a second degree in the section Do you already have a Master's degree?), and this aspect of your academic background can be disadvantageous, even if you are one of the exceptions to the rule.

Please note that our advance assessments only take into account the obligatory courses included in the standard curricula (programme regulations) of the bachelor degrees listed below; i.e. if you take electives/ supplementary courses so as to cover one or more of the required areas, the requirements will be lowered accordingly. In case of a credit transfer of obligatory courses, we reserve the right not to use the advance assessment.

If your exact university and degree and enrolment year are not stated, you will be assessed according to the programme’s entry requirements.
