Management of Innovation and Business Development
The Management of Innovation and Business Development (MIB) concentration consists of around 30% international students, which makes the study environment highly international. The study environment is very supportive and there is a good exchange between professors and students. The professors strive to have an engaging dialogue with the students, and during the semester students are invited to contribute to the MIB Quality Board at which the quality of the teaching and whether there is room for pedagogical improvements and more student involvement in classes will be discussed.
The students in this concentration have an interest in innovation and business development and more generally the processes through which change is shaped. Many students have a very entrepreneurial attitude and seek to start their own company.
Teaching in MIB is a mix of lectures, case-based exercises and project work in groups. In almost all courses, guest speakers from different companies, such as managers and innovation leaders, are invited. There is a strong focus on putting theory into practice as well as gaining the newest knowledge within the field of innovation. There are numerous international professors teaching in the different courses as well as a focus on trying different ways of teaching. All teaching is in English, which is why you need to be fully proficient in English. Courses involve a lot of reading material, including more technical and theoretical discussions of innovation and business development.
At CBS, each course is concluded with an examination. This means that you will have examinations after each semester in December/January and May/June respectively. In this concentration there are also courses running in a more intense period (quarter courses) with exams in October and November in the fall semester and April in the spring semester. The exam types in MIB are a mix of the exam types offered at CBS in general. This includes exam types such as oral exams based on a synopsis, four-hour written exams and oral exams based on a group project.
A special type of exam takes place in the course Innovation and Knowledge in the first semester. The course is taught by a range of different professors who each present a number of exam questions after each module of the course. The exam consists of a selection of exam questions out of the total pool of questions. Answers to all questions need to be based on a case company and innovation that you choose during the course and that you analyze in a group. In this way, you have the opportunity to work on the content of the exam throughout the course.
WORK, LIFE, STUDY BALANCE
The MIB concentration requires a full-time workload. For each course, you have to plan several hours of preparation and to master a lot of reading material. At the same time, combining one’s studies with a student job can make much sense in order to get exposure to companies early on. Many students also choose the company they work at for their case projects.
COMMUNITY AND NETWORK
NIMS, which stands for Network in Innovation Management and Strategy, is the student association of the MIB concentration. NIMS promotes the program’s community and connects students with alumni, faculty members, and partners. Motivation, active participation and teamwork, combined with common goals, are essential to strengthen the identity of the MIB concentration. NIMS is structured in four departments run by highly motivated students: events, partners, internal relations and branding. NIMS organizes an international conference once a year – the Discovery Days – hosted each year by a different participating university.
Being a student-driven and student-focused community, NIMS aims to:
- Connect NIMS students during and after the program to foster the development of a valuable professional and personal network
- Enhance skills through workshops, keynotes and peer-to-peer learning sessions
- Continuously expand relations to corporations, startups, NGOs, and cultural institutions to strengthen the skills of MIB students and to extend their professional relations
