International case competitions
Case Competitions: The General Concept
How does a competition work?
During that time the team members:
- Read the business case (anywhere between 2 and 300 pages)
- Identify the issues
- Develop a solidly researched plan to resolve the issues
- Prepare a presentation to convincingly communicate the proposals/plan for the "board of directors" or relevant body (jury of judges)
Case Competitions: The Vision
Participating in a case competition is an invaluable experience - for the students, for CBS and for the focus company in the case!
Many of the students initially apply because of the chance to travel. But they quickly realize there are other, much more important and valuable reasons.
- "I always thought consultants were people who used nothing more than common sense. My eyes have been opened to the excitement and depth of that field now!"
- "I have learned more in the last four weeks with intense training than I learned in my entire education to date. I've learned how to apply all those theories that seemed so useless outside of the classroom!"
- "Today when applying for full-time positions in consulting, the skills I use the most are those I learned while participating in the case competition.
- "Participating in an international case competition at HKUST in Hong Kong was probably the peak of my three years as an undergraduate.
- "Someone once said; "winning isn’t everything," and I agree. We didn’t win, not the competition anyway, but I still claim we won an experience that cannot be bought ever. CARPE DIEM!"
- "I now have a large international network of future business men and women. You can't put a price on that!"
- "Presenting proposals to a real company that really wants to know what to do and how to do it is a chance that I am so glad I took.
- "I've never been so exhausted. But I've never had so much fun getting so exhausted!"
CBS gains from these experiences as well
- CBS started by benchmarking against the best business schools. CBS has now proudly become one of the benchmarks for other schools.
- CBS students gain polish and poise and assurance that is otherwise a difficult thing to impart in a classroom.
- CBS believes in providing this opportunity to as many students as possible and not restricting itself to the dream team model. CBS has won using this strong democratic model, thus showcasing the breadth and quality of our students and education.
Companies gain from these experiences as well:
- By being the "case company" they get the chance to have bright, young minds look at their business in ways they may never have considered.
- The team proposals are almost always of great use to the company going forward. The winning solution is only part of their gain: even though others schools did not win, companies usually find excellent ideas incorporated in the remaining presentations and often these ideas can be used, as well.
- The companies get a first-hand look at the upcoming graduates and future business men an women in a way that "normal" recruiting activities can never provide.
