Title: Life-Cycle Housing, Fertility and Female Labor Supply Choices

Abstract:

Homeownership plays a special role in wealth accumulation for the majority of households, being their only form of long-term investment. However, surveys indicate that the top reasons people buy a home are non-financial, e.g. owned home being the best environment in which to raise children. To reach the desirable goal of homeownership sooner, people may work harder, sometimes even putting their family formation and fertility prospects aside. We investigate how households make working choices, and when and how many children they choose to have in conjunction with their homeownership prospects, and how housing and homeownership shapes households future employment and childbearing prospects.
