CBS Maritime: International Research Partnership Receives Canadian Federal Grant to Improve Sustainability in the Maritime Supply Chain
Shipping and the wider maritime supply chain have great social impact and a large environmental footprint, and sustainability issues. Particularly carbon and other exhaust gas emissions pose increasingly greater challenges the maritime industry such as growing regulatory fragmentation, increased investment risk and uncertain economic, business and environmental outcomes.
To help mitigate these challenges the Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) has awarded a $2.5 million CAD partnership grant to establish an international research collaboration led by Sauder School of Business’ Centre for Transportation Studies (CTS) and Copenhagen Business School’s CBS Maritime.
Director of CBS Maritime Henrik Sornn-Friese, is co-chairing the partnership together with Professor David Gillen from UBC, and from Department of Operations Management Co-director for CBS Maritime Leonardo Santiago heads the partnership in the business model area while Professor Juliana Hsuan and Associate Professor Cristiana Parisi focuses on the marketization and operationalization of sustainable ship recycling.
Denmark as a Global Maritime Power Hub
“With this new six-year international partnership, CBS Maritime demonstrates that we are actively engaging in making Denmark a global maritime power hub”, says Carsten Ørts Hansen, Head of Department of Operations Management “. He emphasizes the fact, that the partnership is not only a strong collaboration between departments internally at CBS but also includes universities in Canada, Europe, USA and Southeast Asia as well as maritime companies and organizations from Canada, Denmark, France and the UK.
When speaking of Denmark as a future global maritime power hub, Carsten Ørts Hansen points to the potential output of the partnership project in relation to the recommendations from the Danish Maritime Strategy Team presented in the summer of 2017. “We are happy and proud that CBS Maritime with this initiative also takes part in unfolding the ambitions of the Maritime Strategy Team on strengthening the global positioning of the Danish maritime industry towards 2025”, says Carsten Ørts Hansen.
