PhD defence: Casper Hein Winther
In 2015, a Danish pharmaceutical company (PharmaCo) founded an innovation lab (PharmaLab) to enable the digital transformation of the existing business through a business unit located separate from, yet in proximity of corporate headquarters. This thesis studies the paradoxical tensions that persisted within the ambidextrous organization over a five-year period (2015-2020). Through the concept of an ambidexterity cycle, this thesis shows that the ambidextrous organization shifted dynamically between multiple, dynamic equilibria, driven by ambidexterity dynamics, in managing paradoxical tensions over time.
