I study organizations and groups when they make decisions, when they learn from experience, and when they design their collective efforts. By studying these phenomena empirically, I discover the difference between how we talk about reality and how things happen. For instance, we talk as if the rules of a competition determine the outcome (the winner), while commonly, it is the outcome that determines the competition rules with which we justify the chosen winner.
