PhD Defence: Louise Jørring

Torsdag, 30 januar, 2025 - 14:00 to 16:00

In order to obtain the PhD degree, Louise Jørring has submitted her thesis entitled:

Digitalization and the modification of frontline work
A study of frontline workers’ pursuit of meaningfulness

This dissertation contributes to the ongoing debate on public sector digitalization and the transformation of street-level bureaucracy, examining unintended consequences of digitalization from the perspective of frontline workers. Based on extensive qualitative fieldwork in a Danish job center, it presents three interrelated papers that explore how frontline workers navigate, adapt to, and reshape digital technologies to maintain meaningfulness in their work, using both proactive and reactive strategies. Framing these efforts as work modification practices, the study integrates theoretical insights from coping theory, job crafting, and science and technology studies. It highlights the need for new expertise and flexible skills in managing information, time, and digital tools, offering practical insights for implementing digital technologies in ways that are both effective and meaningful.
