Try googling “stakeholder theory”. Google will finish your sentence with the name “Freeman”. As one of the greatest exponents of stakeholder theory, there is a reason as to why American professor R. Edward Freeman is on top of the hit list.

Monday 11 June, the professor of organisational theory and business ethics will visit the international conference CSSI 2018 Symposium, where he will share his thoughts on how stakeholder thinking and partnerships can solve social and environmental problems in society. CBS is hosting this conference in collaboration with The Confederation of Danish Industry.

Leading stakeholder theorist
Freeman is one of the conference’s keynote speakers. 34 years ago, Freeman published his book Strategic management: A stakeholder approach (1984), which became essential to the development and dissemination of stakeholder theory. Since then, stakeholder thinking has become part of the discourse in many business disciplines such as management, marketing, accounting, finance, business ethics and corporate responsibility.

According to Esben Rahbek Pedersen, Professor at CBS and host of the conference, Freeman has fully demonstrated how the stakeholder approach enables leaders to think differently about values, ethics and capitalism without ending up in anti-business and anti-social positions.

In addition to being professor of business administration at Darden School of Business, University of Virginia, Freeman is also Academic Director for The Business Roundtable Institute for Corporate Ethics, Director for Darden's Olsson Center for Applied Ethics and Executive Editor of the journal Philosophy of Management.

Speakers at the conference also include Connie Hedegaard, Chair of the international environmental foundation KR Foundation, and Christian Friis Bach, Secretary General of the Danish Refugee Council.
