Invitation: CBS Sustainability Seminar Series

Making Sense of CSR and Corporate Taxation - Inside and Outside Views

Tuesday, October 29, 2019 - 13:00 to 15:00

Corporate tax avoidance has become one of the big economic issues of our time. While uses of offshore tax havens, transfer pricing, active exploitation of tax loopholes etc. have been going on for decades, recent leaks of confidential documents and exposures of dubious corporate tax practices have given the public new insights into the nature of the problem. As a result, there is a new awareness around a topic that can otherwise seem impenetrable and uninviting for non-specialists.

Steen Vallentin (Associate Professor and Co-Director of CBS Sustainability) will present the outsider’s view (i.e., the CSR view) with regard to the problem of tax avoidance and the issue of corporate taxation more broadly, while Peter Koerver Schmidt (Professor with special responsibilities at CBS LAW), as the insider, will be speaking from the point of view of recent developments in international tax law and from his professional experience as a tax advisor. Scholarship on CSR and corporation taxation remains quite scarce and has ignored issues of taxation altogether. Could divisions of labor in academia and in the business world be the reason? Tax experts usually do not talk about CSR and taxation. There is a need to break down silos, in theory and practice, and find ways to communicate across different areas of expertise. Steen and Peter are aiming to bridge the knowledge gap during the seminar.
