Entry Requirements - MSc in EBA Finance and Strategic Management

STEP 1 - ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Find out how to qualify for the programme and how to improve your chances of being accepted

Entry requirements

You are qualified for (but not guaranteed) admission to the programme if you:
A) Fulfil the specific entry requirements, and
B) Fulfil the language requirement, and
C) Fulfil the general entry requirement of having a bachelor degree

If you do not have, or are currently enrolled in, a bachelor degree, you are considered a dispensee and will be subject to an overall assessment which will determine if a dispensation from the general entry requirement can be granted. Read more about the assessment below.

The programme has a limited number of places, see "Selection criteria" below.

Being assessed as a dispensee
Admission at higher education in Denmark is governed by rules and regulations set out by the Ministry of Higher Education and Science in "Kandidatadgangsbekendtgørelsen". According to §2 in this document, ”Admission at a graduate programme requires a relevant bachelor education (…), or another relevant Danish or foreign education at the same level”.

This is the general entry requirement for graduate programmes and it refers to the applicant’s educational background.

Applicants who do not fulfil the general entry requirements will be assessed as a dispensee according to §5 in "Kandidatadgangsbekendtgørelsen".

NB: In addition to the general requirements, there are also specific entry requirements, which refer to the applicant’s special qualifications within certain subject areas, and which all applicants must fulfil in order to be considered qualified for the programme.

What do we take into consideration when assessing you as a dispensee?

  • The contents of the courses within the specific entry requirements
  • Number of ECTS-points within the specific entry requirements
  • Your motivational essay
  • Documented interest for and experience in the relevant area
  • The academic content of your educational background
  • To some extent your grades in general

Motivational essay:
A motivational essay must be personal and specific, and it must prove that you are well informed and have put a lot of thought into your choice of education. It should explain the purpose and motivation of you choosing this particular education. You should answer questions such as:

  • What can you bring to the table?
  • Why do you think your educational background is relevant?
  • Why do you think your work/ life experience is relevant?
  • How can you compensate for the fact that you do not fulfil the general entry requirement?

Your educational background is the most important factor in our assessment, however, your life and work experience might also be considered, if they are relevant with regard to the chosen programme. Your motivational essay must not exceed two A4 pages.

Specific Entry Requirements

The MSc EBA/cand.merc. graduate programme is the natural progression for the following bachelor degrees: HA Almen from CBS, HA i projektledelse, HA i Europæisk Business, BSc in International Shipping and Trade from CBS, BSc IB from CBS and BSc SEM from CBS. These bachelor degrees fulfil the entry requirements for the MSc EBA/cand.merc. programme (note that, depending on the concentration, the language requirement must also be fulfilled).

Applicants who do not have one of the above mentioned bachelor degrees can also be qualified for the programme, if the academic areas listed below are covered to a sufficient extent. Your educational background will be subject to an overall individual assessment in order to establish whether the following specific entry requirements are met:

7.5 ECTS-points: Organisation

7.5 ECTS-points: Marketing

5 ECTS-points: Microeconomics

7.5 ECTS-points: Quantitative Methods/Statistics

15 ECTS-points: Finance and Accounting (min. 5 ECTS-points required within each area)

47.5 ECTS-points: Business Administration/Economics

More information about the assessment
The specific entry requirements must be covered with academic and research-based courses done at bachelor level. Courses done at master level are not acceptable for the fulfilment of specific entry requirements.

The courses must have a specific academic content and a level of analytical competence comparable to bachelor level courses at CBS. It is up to CBS Admissions to determine if a certain course can fulfil a certain specific entry requirement. The assessment is based on official course descriptions and official study programme regulations.

The exact number of ECTS-points must be covered as per the specific entry requirements listed above (for example, 6 ECTS-points are not sufficient for covering a 7.5 ECTS-points requirement).

If your grade transcript does not indicate the courses' workload in ECTS-points, CBS Admissions will carry out an ECTS-points conversion. For further information see below.

ECTS-points conversion
Here you can read about the general principles behind the ECTS-system, and about conversion from other types of point/credit systems to ECTS.

ECTS-points

ECTS stands for European Credit Transfer System.

ECTS points are a numerical indication of the total workload for the completion of a specific course or education programme. ECTS points do not measure the subject level or degree of difficulty, but only the workload. The ECTS point system indicates the workload - measured in time - that it takes to complete a specific course.

Educational institutions use these standards to assign points for the individual course duration, through a calculation and evaluation of the workload. The points do not indicate anything about the level of an individual course, but only indicate the required workload for the course.

Calculation of points
The ECTS system equates 60 ECTS points for one year of full-time study. According to the Danish Ministry of Education and Science, 60 ECTS-points are equivalent to 1,650 hours of work. One complete year of full-time study (or 60 ECTS-points) include the students’ efforts and time for course preparation, class attendance, writing assignments and taking exams, and it may also include internships. 1 ECTS-point in Denmark is equivalent to an average student workload of approximately 27-28 hours.

Conversion to ECTS-points
A full bachelor’s degree in Denmark equals 180 ECTS-points and consists of six semesters each of 30 ECTS-points. When converting credits, CATs, total hours or other types of points to the ECTS-system, you must first identify how many units of each type are necessary to complete a full programme of study. Furthermore, you must know the prescribed length of time for completion of a bachelor’s degree in your respective educational point system.

We evaluate each individual applicant on a case-by-case basis when deciding how to convert national credits to ECTS-points.

Language requirement

The programme requires English at Danish level A.

The English requirements are very strict, which means that only the qualifications listed on this page are accepted as alternative fulfilment.

If you do not fulfil the English requirements at the time of applying, you have until study start to document fulfilment. In other words, you are welcome to apply without fulfilling the English requirement, but you must fulfil the requirements as listed on this page before study start.

If you need to take a language test/exam, you must ensure that your scores are available to CBS Admissions by 1 September. Read more about accepted language tests/exams and deadlines below.

NB: If you are studying at a Danish bachelor programme at CBS, we do not have the documentation you handed together with your KOT application for bachelor studies, and if requested to document that you fulfil the English language requirement, you are to hand it in again.

EU/EEA Equivalencies

Below are listed all EU/EEA countries with information on English A equivalency for each country – only the stated exams/courses fulfil the entry requirement in English A. Please note that the exam/course must be passed.

If you do not fulfil the English requirement according to the list, you are to do an English test.

Accepted language tests

The following English tests/exams are accepted instead of English level A:

  • IELTS academic test result of at least 6,5 (please note that this will change to 7,0 as of the admission round in 2018)
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English passed
  • Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English passed with A or B or C
  • TOEFL iBT test result of at least 91
  • TOEFL paper-based test result of at least 577
  • TOEFL ITP institutional test done at CBS with a score of at least 577

Deadlines for English tests/exams:

To ensure that your test/exam scores are available to us on time, it is important that you sign up for a test/exam taking place no later than: 5 August 2017

  • If you take a TOEFL test: you must ask the TOEFL institution to make your scores available to CBS. Our institutional code is 7035. You may choose any of the available department codes.
  • If you take an IELTS test: you can upload a copy of your score sheet, as we have access to check the result online in the IELTS database.
  • If you take a Cambridge exam: you can upload a copy of your diploma or provide us with the necessary details to verify your results online

General information on English tests/exams:

Cambridge exams: You will find general information on the Cambridge examinations here. In Copenhagen the test is administered by Studieskolen.

IELTS - International English Language Testing System: IELTS is organised by British Council all over the world. CBS only accepts IELTS academic test results. See IELTS for further information on IELTS worldwide and EDU Denmark for information on IELTS in Denmark. CBS accepts copies of test results uploaded in the Application Portal, as we are able to have the results confirmed online. Please note that an IELTS test that is more than two years old may not necessarily be confirmed by IELTS - if we are not able to have your result confirmed because it is more than two years old, we will inform you and you are then to fulfil the English requirement in another way.

TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language: You can either take this test in Denmark or elsewhere in the world. See TOEFL for further information on the TOEFL test; for the TOEFL test offered in Copenhagen, see Studieskolen's website. CBS does not accept copies of test results: you are to ask for the result to be sent to CBS's Institutional Code (7035). Please note that a TOEFL test that is more than two years old cannot be confirmed by TOEFL/ETS and therefore it cannot be used. Also, please note that TOEFL tests results sent to CBS from ETS are the property of CBS and will not be handed over to applicants; copies (whether certified or not) will not be handed out to applicants either. The results may be used internally at other departments at CBS (e.g. The International Office); if you wish to have a TOEFL result sent to another department at CBS, please go to the contact pages.

Choosing the right test

If you need an English test to fulfil the English requirements, it is your responsibility to find an institution that offers it, sign up for a test at a suitable available date and have the scores sent to CBS Admissions Office.

Take the test as soon as possible!
Don’t wait until August – you might be surprised to find out that all the test dates have already been booked.

Prepare for the test!
Find out what the test consists of and practice in advance – most testing institutions provide test takers with preparation materials. Do not underestimate the difficulty of the test. Last year, almost 49% of the CBS TOEFL test takers failed to score enough points the first time they took the test.

Consider which test is best for you!
Different English language tests and exams measure your language skills in different ways. Know your strengths and choose a test that will enhance these.

Below we have listed the most common types of English tests and exams that meet the English language requirement for CBS:

Name of test/exam

Short description of test/exam with comments

IELTS test

The IELTS test has four sections: listening, reading, writing and speaking. The speaking section takes the form of a face-to-face interview, where an examiner and the test taker engage in conversation. This is usually an advantage for test takers with strong speaking skills. A variety of native-speaker accents (North American, Australian, New Zealand, and British) is used in the listening section, and all standard varieties of English are accepted in all parts of the test.

Paper-based TOEFL test

The TOEFL PBT test has three sections: listening comprehension, structure and written expression, and reading comprehension, plus a 30-minute writing test. There is no speaking section in the TOEFL PBT test, which might be a disadvantage for test-takers with strong speaking skills.

Internet-based TOEFL test

The TOEFL iBT test has four sections (listening, reading, speaking and writing). The speaking section is not a conversation – you speak into a microphone attached to the computer, which can be seen as an inconvenient by certain test takers. You might be more comfortable taking this test if you are used to American English and accents.

GSK in English A

If you have a Danish upper secondary exam with a level B in English, you should consider taking a GSK course and exam in English level A. The advantage is that you also participate in classes and receive teaching, while the exam has a familiar form as it is similar to any other Danish upper secondary exam.

Cambridge Exam
(Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency passed or Certificate of Advanced English passed with A or B or C)

The exam consists of five sections, including an oral section which takes the form of a face-to-face interview with an examiner. A Cambridge certificate is valid for life, whereas the TOEFL or IELTS expire after two years.

Alternative fulfilment
NB: Only the following alternatives are accepted as fulfilment of English A
  • A complete bachelor degree done in English in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, UK or the US.
  • A complete upper secondary education done in English in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, UK or the US.
  • Certain upper secondary educations from EU/EEA countries: see English A Equivalency in EU/EEA above
  • Certain bachelor degrees done in English in Denmark: all bachelor programmes in English at CBS; BA(int.)/SPRØK at SDU; Negot IF studied with English at SDU.

Selection Criteria

The programme MSc in Economics & Business Administration (MSc EBA / cand.merc.) has a limited number of places, both at the programme as a whole and at individual concentrations.

You are therefore not guaranteed a place at the programme or at an individual concentration, even if you fulfill all the entry requirements for the programme.

Selection criteria are applied if there are more qualified applicants than places.

Part of the selection criteria is whether or not you already have a Danish Master’s degree. A completed Master's degree can be a disadavantage in the overall assessment. If you have a completed Master's degree from a country other than Denmark, this does not apply to you. Note that applicants with a completed Danish Master's degree can only enrol in a new degree programme in certain circumstances (see the section "Rules and Exemptions" under "Step 2") and even if you are an exception to the rule, this can be disadvantageous.

There are selection criteria for the programme as a whole, and, in addition to these, there are also selection criteria for each individual concentration.

The selection process takes place in two stages.

Stage 1: Selection at the programme as a whole

If there are more qualified applicants than places available at the MSc EBA as a whole, selection criteria will be applied. There are five sets of selection criteria. Your exact academic background determines which set of selection criteria will be applied for you and therefore which of the following five quotas you belong to.

Quotas for selection criteria at the programme as a whole
  • Quota 1 - Applicants with a legal claim to MSc EBA

You have a legal claim to be accepted at MSc EBA (but NOT at a specific concentration), if:

a) MSc EBA is the natural progression for your bachelor degree (see Overview – Admission for CBS bachelor degrees), AND
b) your bachelor degree is from CBS, AND
c) you apply for the MSc EBA the same year as you finish your bachelor degree.

If you are not eligible for a place based on the selection criteria for any of the concentrations you have chosen, you will be contacted with a view to prioritising the remaining MSc EBA concentrations.

  • Quota 2: Applicants with a bachelor degree within business administration

If you have a bachelor degree within business administration (see definition below), you are subject to an overall assessment of your academic background at undergraduate level with a focus on your courses and grades within business administration; broad and in-depth knowledge as well as grades within the academic areas constituting the specific entry requirements are of importance.

Quota 2A – used in 2016 only: in 2016 applicants who already have a bachelor degree with a GPA from a Danish university at the time of application will be assessed based on this GPA.

  • Quota 3: Applicants with a bachelor degree NOT within business administration

If your bachelor degree is not within business administration (see definition below), you are subject to an overall assessment of your academic background at undergraduate level with a focus on your courses and grades within business administration; broad and in-depth knowledge as well as grades within the academic areas constituting the specific entry requirements are of importance.

  • Quota 4: Applicants with a Danish HD part II diploma

If you have a HD part II diploma which fulfills the requirements to be qualified for MSc EBA as per the standard assessment (see "Standard assessments" at the bottom of this page), you are subject to an assessment focusing on grades:
- If you have finished a HD part II degree, your GPA from the HD part II is used as selection criteria.
- If you have not yet finished your HD part II degree, your grades obtained at the time of application are considered.

  • Quota 5: Dispensees

If you do not have a bachelor degree, you are considered a dispensee and will be subject to an individual assessment. Please note that applicants with a HD part II diploma which fulfills the requirements to be qualified for MSc EBA as per the standard assessment (see "Standard assessments" at the bottom of this page) will be assessed in Quota 4.

The following Danish bachelor degrees are within business administration:

BSc in Business Administration and Service Management; BSc in International Business; BSc in Business Administration; HA - regardless of specialisation; BSc in International Business and Politics; BSc in Business Administration and Sociology; BSc in Business, Language and Culture (also known as SPRØK or Negot); BA int. (also known as SPRØK); BSc in Business, Asian Language and Culture (also known as ASP); BSc in Business Administration and Sociology; HA(mat.); HA(dat.); HA(it.); HA(jur.) - regardless of specialisation; HA(fil.); HA(psyk.); HA(kom.); HA(int.) (also known as HA og 1 fremmedsprog); HA pro.

If you have a non-Danish degree, CBS Admissions Office will, based on the above, evaluate if your degree is within business administration. It is not important whether you obtain a "BA" or "BSc" degree, as long as your degree is equivalent to one of the areas listed above.

Applicants who are selected during Stage 1 to be given a place at the MSc EBA programme will advance to the next stage in the selection process.

Stage 2: Selection at the concentration

All concentrations at MSc EBA have established selection criteria in case there are more qualified applicants than places at a certain concentration. This means that if there are more applicants fulfilling the entry requirements (i.e. qualified applicants) than places available, a selection among qualified applicants will take place. Qualified applicants who are not accepted at the concentration will be taken into consideration at lower priorities.

Remember:

  • Make sure you upload the correct documentation, as this can improve your chances of being accepted – for more details see Step 2 – Your application.
  • If you are not accepted at your first priority, we will assess your application for your lower priorities.
  • At Step 3 – Our answer you can get an overview of last year's admission round; keep in mind that changes can occur from one admission year to another.

The selection process at Finance and Strategic Management (FSM) is based on an overall assessment of the educational background of applicants (at undergraduate/bachelor level), primarily taking extensive and in-depth knowledge of finance, quantitative methods, micro economics and strategy into consideration, and secondarily the grade level in finance, quantitative methods, micro economics and strategy into consideration.

ARE YOU QUALIFIED?

You are qualified for a graduate programme if you fulfil all its entry requirements.

If you wish to find out whether you are qualified for a graduate programme, you have the following options:

  • You can check if we have already published a standard assessment for your bachelor degree
  • You can try to make your own self-assessment

NB: Being qualified does not necessarily mean that you are guaranteed acceptance at the programme, since all CBS graduate programmes have a limited number of places.

Standard Assessment

A standard assessment is an evaluation of the obligatory courses included in the standard curricula (programme regulations) of a certain bachelor degree.

It indicates to what extent your obligatory courses fulfil the specific entry requirements for a graduate programme.

A standard assessment does not take into account elective courses, i.e. if you do elective courses or take supplementary courses in one or more of the required areas, the requirements will be lowered accordingly.

You can read more about choosing electives or doing supplementary courses at CBS below.

Standard assessments are published at the bottom of this page.

Typically we make standard assessments whenever we experience that a great number of applicants with the same bachelor degree tend to apply for the same graduate programme. You cannot yourself request a standard assessment to be made of your bachelor degree.

Self-Assessment

You are welcome to try and establish yourself to what extent you fulfil the specific entry requirements for a graduate programme. Make a list of all the undergraduate courses that you have taken so far or are going to take, as part of your bachelor degree or in addition to your bachelor degree, and compare them to the programme's specific entry requirements. You can use this form:

Self-assessment form

Read the course titles and course descriptions carefully. Try to categorise the courses according to the graduate programme’s specific entry requirements.

To get an understanding of how we typically define the various course categories, see below under the headline, “Courses at CBS”. Here you can see how we have assessed various CBS courses, with regard to fulfilling specific entry requirements for the CBS graduate programmes. Read the course titles and descriptions, and compare them with your own, to get a better idea of what types of courses can normally fulfil the specific entry requirements.

If your university does not use ECTS-points, please see the information on the general principles concerning credit conversion from various other systems into the ECTS-system higher on this page.

You are welcome to add your self-assessment to the documentation you upload when you apply for a CBS graduate programme.

Your self-assessment is not binding for us, but it can help you prepare your application and it can help us get a better overview of your educational background.

Becoming qualified

If you do not fulfil the specific entry requirements, please read about your further options below. In addition, you can also find information about the rules concerning supplementary courses

Have you completed your bachelor’s degree by the application deadline?

If you do not fulfil some of the specific entry requirements for a master’s programme, you can take supplementary courses under certain circumstances to become qualified.

Supplementary courses are courses taken in addition to your bachelor degree with the purpose of fulfilling the specific entry requirements for a graduate programme.

For information about the conditions, see below.

You may take supplementary courses at CBS, at another Danish university or abroad, as long as they are done at academic bachelor level and are within the course area that you are missing. It is entirely up to CBS Admissions to assess in which category a course belongs.

Registration for supplementary courses must be documented before the application deadline.

Supplementary courses must be passed before the study start of the programme.

NB: Being qualified does not necessarily mean that you are guaranteed acceptance at the programme, since all CBS graduate programmes have a limited number of places.

The conditions for using supplementary courses during the application and admission process are as follows:

If you have completed your bachelor’s degree by the application deadline
•    You can use a maximum of 30 ECTS-points worth of supplementary courses in total
•    You have to pay for your courses yourself.

The following courses may be taken into consideration in the assessment:

Supplementary

The following courses will not be taken into consideration in the assessment:

Supplementary

If you are taking, or are planning to register for, supplementary courses, make sure to document that you have registered for the courses in your application by the application deadline. Find information on how to document your registration for supplementary courses.

Applied in 2017 and applying again in 2018?
If you have planned to take supplementary courses during the summer, you should be aware of the rules regarding supplementary courses:

If you had already completed your bachelor degree by the 2017 application deadline, any 2017 summer semester courses you take after having been rejected or conditionally accepted for graduate admission at CBS will not be included in our assessment if you apply again in the future.  Supplementary courses can only be included in the given admission year if they are taken after you have received a letter of conditional acceptance for the given admission year.

Example:
You have finished your bachelor degree in January 2017 and you apply for a graduate programme before 1 April 2017. You have already registered for a course at CBS’ Summer University Programme (ISUP) 2017. With this course, you are qualified for admission, but you are rejected during the selection process (because there are more qualified applicants than places). If you decide to take the ISUP course in 2017 regardless, we will NOT be able to include the course in our assessment if you apply for admission again in 2018.

Find information about how to withdraw from ISUP courses.

The rules regarding supplementary courses are regulated by "Uddannelsesbekendtgørelsen" which can be found at retsinformation.dk by searching "Uddannelsesbekendtgørelsen" in the searchfield called "Titel" (In Danish only).

Finishing your bachelor's degree Summer 2018?

If you do not fulfil some of the specific entry requirements for a master’s programme, you have the following two options to become qualified:

  1. You can choose your electives or exchange courses so as they meet the missing specific entry requirements and/or

  2. You can take supplementary courses under certain circumstances so as to meet the missing specific entry requirements. Supplementary courses are courses taken in addition to your bachelor degree with the purpose of fulfilling the specific entry requirements for a graduate programme. For information about the conditions, see below.

You may take electives and supplementary courses at CBS, at another Danish university or abroad, as long as they are done at academic bachelor level and are within the course area that you are missing.

If you are completing your bachelor’s degree in the 2018 summer semester
•    You can use a maximum of 30 ECTS-points worth of supplementary courses in total
•    You have to pay for your courses yourself.

The following courses may be taken into consideration in the assessment:

Supplementary

If you are taking, or are planning to register for, supplementary courses, make sure to document that you have registered for the courses in your application by the application deadline. Find information on how to document your registration for supplementary courses.

The rules regarding supplementary courses are regulated by "Uddannelsesbekendtgørelsen" which can be found at retsinformation.dk by searching "Uddannelsesbekendtgørelsen" in the searchfield called "Titel" (In Danish only).

Individual course assessment

We are not able to do an assessment of your courses in advance. To get an idea of which of your courses fulfil the entry requirements, please see how CBS has assessed the offered elective courses under the headline "Undergraduate courses". You can also see how to make a self-assesment above.

Improving your chances

Being qualified does not necessarily mean that you are guaranteed acceptance at the programme, since the programme has a limited number of places.

In certain cases, you may be able to improve your chances of getting accepted by choosing your electives or taking extra courses so as to add to your qualifications within the areas that are mentioned in the selection criteria.

You can read more about selection criteria higher up on this page.

You can take extra courses at CBS, or at any university in Denmark or abroad, as long as the courses are done at academic undergraduate level and within the course areas that are relevant for the programme's selection criteria. Remember that it is entirely up to CBS Admissions to assess if a course is relevant for the selection criteria.

Extra courses must be documented and passed before the application deadline.

If you intend to take extra courses at CBS, you can read more about it above under "Courses at CBS".

Standard assesments

The following standard assessments will be used for the 2018 admission year.

Please note that our standard assessments only take into account the obligatory courses included in the standard curricula (programme regulations) of the bachelor degrees listed below; i.e. if you take electives/supplementary courses so as to cover one or more of the required areas, the requirements will be lowered accordingly. In case of a credit transfer of obligatory courses, we reserve the right not to use the standard assessment.

If your exact university and degree and enrolment year are not stated, you will be assessed according to the programme’s entry requirements.

Fulfilment of the entry requirements does not guarantee admission at the programme.
