Why did I choose my programme?
Growing up in a world and society that are rapidly and constantly developing in many different aspects, I want to understand how that has impacted the world so far, and how it will affect my future. Combining the Business perspective with the Sociological perspective helps me build a broad and deep understanding of the capitalistic society we live in. Moreover, the programme gives you a very valuable education that makes your options afterwards very broad, which I think is great.
What do I like the best?
First of all, I really enjoy how modern our courses are. We get to analyse real-time world problems and learn to make use of the courses that we take. This also makes the courses feel more important and relevant for my future career. Second, I like that the students and professors around me have high standards that keep me on my toes and push me to always do my best. Simultaneously, I feel accepted and seen for my work and who I am, keeping my desire to perform well at a healthy level.
What do I think is difficult?
Especially in the beginning, it is hard to build a good balance. There is a lot of literature to go through the first semester, and most students are not able to read everything, which you later learn is okay. Additionally, during the first semester, most students want to find new friends and build a social life. It is difficult for most students to find a good balance in their life in the beginning, but after a while everybody does.
What would I have liked to have known before starting my programme?
I would have liked to know that the main focus of my programme is sociology and not business administration. There is one mathematical/economic course per semester, meaning that only a fourth of the courses in the programme are strictly business/finance related. The rest of the courses have a focus on sociological perspectives. However, the sociological courses are often related to business administration, which helps one build a better understanding of general business life.
What do I want to do after finishing my programme?
I want to continue on and get a master’s degree. Since our bachelor’s programme is so unique, there is no specific master’s programme that you are “supposed to study” afterwards. Here at CBS, the most fitting master’s programme is in International Business and Politics, a great programme that I am considering! On the other hand, since our programme is so broad, there are numerous options for me out there, so I have not made my final choice yet.
If I could give myself a piece of advice, before starting it would be…
Know that everyone struggles in the beginning and it will get easier. Furthermore, if you do get in, you do have what it takes to study here at CBS, and you will get through all the courses even though they might be challenging at times. Remember to relax, have fun along the way, and dare to be forward and ask questions.
