ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
You are qualified for, but not guaranteed admission to CBS if you:
- Fulfil the general entry requirement of having an upper secondary leaving exam AND
- Fulfil the specific entry requirements for the programmes in your application
If you do not fulfil the general entry requirement of having an upper secondary leaving exam, you may apply as a dispensee. Read more about applying as a dispensee, and the criteria involved, further down on this page.
The general entry requirement
On the Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Science website you can find out what is required from your country to fulfil the general entry requirement of an upper secondary leaving exam.
The Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Science is the national agency under the Danish Ministry of Education, which supports the internationalisation of education and training in Denmark and provides information about education in Denmark. You can see an overview of various countries and an assessment of the educational levels (including grade conversions to the Danish scale) here. Please note that this is available in Danish only.
Please follow this link to see an overview of the accepted Danish school leaving exams: Bacheloroptag: Adgangskrav
An overall assessment is made for each application based on the following criteria:
- Your educational background and grades: we look at both your grades overall plus the grades for the specific entry requirements (in the context of the grading scale for your country)
- Relevant extra-curricular activities: periods abroad, work experience, further education etc. Read more under ‘Extra-curricular activities in Quota 2’ above
- Motivational essay: you should write a motivational essay for each of the programmes in your application. Read ’Motivational Essay’ below for inspiration on the content
You may have to translate your documents
If you have documents that are not in English, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, French or German, then you must upload a translation as well as a scan of the originals. Documents that are not in one of the above languages will not be assessed as part of your application.
This section is for those who have not completed a full upper secondary exam.
Your application will be processed as a dispensee if one of the following applies to you:
- You have not completed an upper secondary school exam, but are able to apply on the basis of other relevant experience and education.
- You have an IBCP (International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme)
- You have completed an upper secondary school exam that is not equivalent to a Danish upper secondary exam, e.g. you have received a Waldorf education (Rudolf Steiner School).
Dispensee applications are processed in the Quota 2 selection and must adhere to the rules and deadlines for Quota 2. Please be aware that very few places at CBS are allocated to dispensee applicants and the selection process can be very tough. For this reason, we strongly advise all dispensee applicants to upload a Motivational Essay for all of their applications to CBS (regardless of programme).
You must be able to document that you have passed the following as a minimum for all bachelor degree programmes for which you wish to apply:
- The specific entry requirements
- 2-3 extra subjects at upper secondary school level (A, B or C) so that overall you have passed exams in at least 6 subjects at upper secondary school level. The 6 subjects altogether are being used as alternative fulfilment of the general entry requirement.
An overall assessment is made for each dispensee application. An overall assessment includes:
- Your educational background: you must fulfil the entry requirements for the relevant programme(s) as given in Entry Requirements
- Relevant extra-curricular activities: periods abroad, work experience, further education etc. Please see ‘Activities in Quota 2’ above.
- Motivational essay: Please see ’Motivational Essay’ above for inspiration on the content. You should write a motivational essay for each programme in your application.
You may have to translate your documents
If you have documents that are not in English, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, French or German, then you must upload a translation as well as a scan of the originals. Documents that are not in one of the above languages will not be assessed as part of your application.

The numbers are weighted (GCSE = 1; AS level = 1.5 and A level = 2) For example, A* at GCSE = 12 weighted once whereas A* at A-level = 12 weighted twice (so 24 divided by 2 when calculating the average) and we then calculate the (weighted) average.

Choosing the right test
If you need an English test to fulfil the English requirements, it is your responsibility to find an institution that offers it, sign up for a test at a suitable available date and have the scores sent to CBS Admissions Office.
Take the test as soon as possible!
Don’t wait until the 24 June – you might be surprised to find out that all the test dates have already been booked or you may fail your first attempt.
Prepare for the test!
Find out what the test consists of and practice in advance – most testing institutions provide test takers with preparation materials. Do not underestimate the difficulty of the test – last year, almost 49% of the CBS TOEFL test takers failed to score enough points the first time they took the test.
Consider which test is best for you!
Different English language tests and exams measure your language skills in different ways. Know your strengths and choose a test that will enhance these.
Below we have listed the most common types of English tests and exams that meet the English language requirement for CBS:
Name of test/exam |
Short description of test/exam with comments |
---|---|
IELTS test |
The IELTS test has four sections: listening, reading, writing and speaking. The speaking section takes the form of a face-to-face interview, where an examiner and the test taker engage in conversation. This is usually an advantage for test takers with strong speaking skills. A variety of native-speaker accents (North American, Australian, New Zealand, and British) is used in the listening section, and all standard varieties of English are accepted in all parts of the test. |
Paper-based TOEFL test |
The TOEFL PBT test has three sections: listening comprehension, structure and written expression, and reading comprehension, plus a 30-minute writing test. There is no speaking section in the TOEFL PBT test, which might be a disadvantage for test-takers with strong speaking skills. |
Internet-based TOEFL test |
The TOEFL iBT test has four sections (listening, reading, speaking and writing). The speaking section is not a conversation – you speak into a microphone attached to the computer, which can be seen as an inconvenient by certain test takers. You might be more comfortable taking this test if you are used to American English and accents. |
GSK in English A |
If you have a Danish upper secondary exam with a level B in English, you should consider taking a GSK course and exam in English level A. The advantage is that you also participate in classes and receive teaching, while the exam has a familiar form as it is similar to any other Danish upper secondary exam. |
Cambridge Exam |
The exam consists of five sections, including an oral section which takes the form of a face-to-face interview with an examiner. A Cambridge certificate is valid for life, whereas the TOEFL or IELTS expire after two years. |
