PhD defence: Stefan Kirkegaard Sløk-Madsen

In this thesis is explored research questions concerning commercialization and entrepreneurial choices. For this purpose, the thesis considers entrepreneurship as the exercise of judgment under uncertainty. This view of entrepreneurship is investigated explicitly in the context of firm-based commercialization. The thesis outlines the theoretical implications of this view as well as the state of commercialization research within management science. From here, the thesis empirically engages maritime offshore service firms to investigate the heuristics of commercial entrepreneurial judgments in resource-scarce but information rich environments and the optimal capability investment for value capture in complex and highly uncertain derived-demand markets. The thesis also proposes a middle-range theory to explain under which conditions entrepreneurs might judge nonmarket commercialization superior to market commercialization for the attainment of their desires.
