February, 18th, 2015: 6th 2014-2015 meeting of CBS's Markets and Valuation Cluster (session in collaboration with CASPRO)

Dear colleagues,

Wednesday, February 18 will be the sixth 2014-2015 meeting of CBS-Private Public Platform’s Markets and Valuation Cluster; this time in joint collaboration with CASPRO (Center for advanced studies on project management at CBS). Peter Skærbæk and Kjell Tryggestad will present and discuss their work-in-progress (co-authored with Mark Christensen) ‘Accounting inscriptions in outsourcing trials of strength: time-space dynamics’.

Abstract:

Public sector outsourcing is a program within a suite of contemporary NPM reforms mobilizing private enterprises in the belief of a more efficient public sector. Danish Armed Forces outsourcing of its facility services and management emerged as an option in 1991. Two strategic options developed; one promoted immediate outsourcing while the other promoted internal optimization first. We study how the two options emerged and were valued differently by the supra-national outsourcing program and the local Defense projects over 22 years and how that valuation process involved accounting. Drawing on Actor-Network Theory we show how the two strategic options emerged and were pitted against each other in what Callon describes as in vivo and in vitro ‘trials of strength’. The contribution of the paper is in three actions: 1. highlights how accounting inscriptions take part in formulating, evaluating and advancing different outsourcing strategies during a series of trials of strength, 2. develops the concept of ‘trial of strength’ for accounting and organizational research by showing how ‘the rules of the game’ for the trials of strength can become challenged and become an output together with the “winner”, and finally 3. shows that, in addition to the pervasive role of programs, projects as subprograms can play a strategic role in becoming anti-programs and they can add the dynamics of time and space dimensions of outsourcing.

Wednesday, February 18th, 10.00-12.00, Copenhagen Business School, Kilen, Kilevej 14A, 4, 2000 Frederiksberg. Room: Kilen, K4.74. The seminar is free and open for participation, but it is expected that participants have read the circulated material. To attend, please write to seminar.ioa@cbs.dk to receive the readings.

January, 21st, 2015: 5th 2014-2015 meeting of CBS-Private Public Platform's Markets and Valuation Cluster

Wednesday, January 21st will be the fifth 2014-2015 meeting of CBS-Private Public Platform’s Markets and Valuation Cluster (http://www.cbs.dk/viden-samfundet/business-in-society/public-private/research-and-platform-clusters/clusters.)

Ann-Christina Lange (http://www.cbs.dk/en/research/departments-and-centres/department-of-management-politics-and-philosophy/staff/alampp) will present and discuss her paper ‘Crowding of Adaptive Strategies: Swarm Theory and High-Frequency Trading’.

Abstract: High-Frequency Trading represents a complex trading system that operates at, or beyond, the limits of human response times – towards the speed of light. Execution of trades now takes place in 740 nanoseconds. This means that crowd dynamics in financial markets are replaced by algorithms reacting to signals and thereby reduced to mere expression. It has been said that the sociality of markets is now reduced to an age of machines. The UK Foresight report published by the UK Government Office for Science defines this era as characterized by impersonal efficiency. However, drawing on interviews with High-frequency traders and observations of their interaction with high-speed algorithms, this paper poses a different argument. Traders discuss their algorithms as interacting agents operating in the market. Drawing on ethnographic observations and interviews I show how algorithms are designed to learn from their operation and rewrite themselves. They are programmed to detect signals and act accordingly. This furthers questions about their social behavior: Do algorithms have emergent properties? And if so, what social order characterizes such non-human interaction? Instead of arguing for the end of the social in post-human trading the paper propose swarm theory as a way to conceptualize the social in finance today; swarms understood as the organization of multiple, individuated units with some relation to one another (or individual agents producing collective effects). Swarms are, in other words, defined by relationality and the fact that it is ‘more than the sum of its parts’ (see Thacker 2004). Indeed, the media theorist Jussi Parikka defines swarms as what characterizes computer science algorithms, multi-agent systems and insects (2010).

Wednesday, January 21st, 10.00-12.00, Copenhagen Business School, Kilen, Kilevej 14A, 4, 2000 Frederiksberg. Room: Kilen, K2.74. The seminar is free and open for participation, but it is expected that participants have read the circulated material. To attend, please write to Trine (tp.ioa@cbs.dk) to receive the readings.

November 18th, 2014: New Sites in Organization Studies, LPF & IOA Seminar

This seminar series, jointly hosted by IOA and MPP, brings new and neglected phenomena to the attention of the field of organization studies. It is grounded as a response to recent editions of the journal Organization Studies (notably 'The dark side of organization', Linstead et al. 2014; 'New sights/sites: Exploring the white spaces of organization', O’Doherty et al. 2013) and is connected to the journal's new section 'X and Organisation Studies'. This section has three related roles. First to encourage a more essayistic style of writing, approachable to readers beyond as well as within the field. Second, to consider hitherto overlooked phenomena, or those considered too elusive or difficult to research. Third, to broach the edges of the field, allowing different conversations in, and informing conversations beyond.

Our first two contributions will be: "Ruin and Organization Studies" by Christian De Cock and "Colour and Organization Studies" by Timon Beyes

October 22nd, 1st 2014-2015 meeting of the Copenhagen Markets and Valuations Group

This time we’ll be visited by Karen Boll (Post.Doc., Department of Organization, CBS), and we discuss her paper: ‘State regulation through engagement of buyers and activation of the market economy – Is ‘Neoliberal Tax Management’ taking form?’

Karen’s article discusses a form of state regulation where government officials engage and involve external stakeholders in co-producing regulation. It reports two examples in which the state seeks to regulate in this way; one case concerns illegal contracting in the cleaning sector, the other concerns the operation of un-licenced businesses.

The seminar is free and open for participation, but it is expected that participants have read the circulated material. To attend, please register with seminar.ioa@cbs.dk (please mention the name of this seminar in the subject of your email) and you will receive the readings (one week before the seminar).

October 8th, 2014: Inaugural lecture with Signe Vikkelsø

The Making of 'Organization' as an Epistemic and Practical Object by Signe Vikkelsø.
How is ‘organization’ – an intangible and intricate phenomenon – constituted as something that can be analyzed, discussed and acted upon? This inaugural lecture presents a research program that aims to understand the role of concepts, methods and models for the way ‘organization’ over time has been treated as an epistemic and practical object. It also seeks to relate changes in the repertoire of analytical tools and techniques in organization theory to deeper ruptures in the disciplinary field, its objects of study, and its practical and political dimensions

May 7th, 2013: Imagine.. seminar by David Stark

Game Changer: The Topology of Creativity in Video Game Development. Network research suggests that a team topology balancing familiarity (via cohesion) and diversity (via brokerage) is the key to success. We go beyond the duality of brokerage and closure by adopting the concept of structural folding – the generative tension in overlapping cohesive groups. In elaborating the causal mechanisms at work in structural folding, we hypothesize that the effects of structural folding on inventiveness and on creative success are especially strong when overlapping groups are cognitively distant.

May 15th, 2012: Lecture with Pforzheimer Professor Sheila Jasanoff, Harvard University

In this talk, I turn for explanations to the complex relations among scientific knowledge, evidence, and persuasion in the public sphere. Drawing on decades of comparative research, I identify the challenges faced by institutions that seek to bridge uncertainty across disparate political cultures. I argue that we need to retheorize the constitutional position of science in the contemporary global order in order to build the kind of cosmopolitan knowledge that can resist global skepticism and distrust.

April 26th, 2012: Future of organization studies

Is OS becoming outdated, empirically irrelevant, or losing its scholarly touch? Is it losing out to other fields? Is there hope of renewal, and if so, in what form? What is happening to the field? What can we as scholars do to save it, or should we do anything to save it? We invite international and local scholars to a series of seminars hosted by the Department of Organization, to reflect on the past, the present and possible futures of organization studies.

March 28th, 2012: Imagine.. seminar by Amélie Boutinot

Reputation-building is a difficult process, but one that is vital to survive and improve career paths in creative industries. One reason artists face difficulties is that reputation-building may lack of clarity in the relationships between the various and apparently distinct kinds of reputation an artist can have. This paper suggests understanding better the way several kinds of reputations are built and combined in creative industries. Our structural model results, based on a sample of 103 contemporary French architects, indicate that the specific reputations an artist can acquire are inter-constituted and interact with each other. Thanks to our empirical study, we contribute to reputation and creative industries literatures.

March 19th, 2012: From Theory to Theorizing by Professor Richard Swedberg, Cornell University

Since World War II methods have advanced very quickly in sociology and social science, while this has not been the case with theory. In this talk I suggest that one way of beginning to close the gap between the two, might be to focus on theorizing rather than on theory.

March 8th, 2012: Imagine.. seminar by Lasse Steiner

The artistic labor market is marked by several adversities, such as low wages, above-average unemployment, and constrained underemployment. Nevertheless, it attracts many young people. The number of students exceeds the available jobs by far. A potential explanation for this puzzle is that artistic work might result in exceptionally high job satisfaction, a conjecture that has been mentioned at various times in the literature.

October 7th, 2011: Lecture by Professor Annelise Riles, Cornell Law School

Drawing upon her ten years of ethnographic fieldwork in the Japanese derivatives market, Riles explores the uses of collateral in the financial markets as a regulatory device for stabilizing market transactions. How collateral operates, Riles suggests, is paradigmatic of a class of low-profile, mundane, but indispensable activities and practices that are all too often ignored as we think about how markets should work and be governed.  Riles seeks to democratize our understanding of legal techniques, and demonstrate how these day-to-day private actions can be reformed to produce more effective forms of market regulation.
