Transitioning Towards Sustainable Procurement

The strategic research initiative ”Transitioning towards sustainable procurement” was launched by the Department of operations management in November 2021, as a core part of the sustainable procurement project (SPI). The initiative is concerned with exploring sustainable procurement practices, and supporting the long term journey that Danish companies are engaged in, in their efforts to green their supply networks and to source sustainable products and services.

Sustainable Procurement Initiatives

The active CBS research faculty involved in the project are:

The initiative focuses on case-based research and collaboration with our partner companies in developing and sharing new knowledge on how the transitioning towards sustainable procurement is unfolded in practice. As a core feature in our research, we explore the challenges and best practices that emerge in practice as firms seek to transition towards a greener supply network.

The following main subjects are currently part of our active research:

  • Environmental footprinting (Scope 3) / Managing CO2 emissions.
  • Measuring and managing sustainable supply performance.
  • Sustainable product innovations and circular product supply.
  • Compliance and certifications in supply management.
  • Sustainable supplier relationship management and governance of suppliers.
  • Frictions, dilemmas, competing requirements, stakeholder- and change management.

The research project aims to develop new knowledge published in leading international research journals, and shared with companies in Denmark and internationally to help enable a smoother transitioning towards a more sustainable future.

A core feature in the initiative is also the active involvement of graduate students from the CBS, mainly from the SCM line and the Procurement Minor in our research initiative. In the spring 2022, 15 master thesis students developed their master thesis together with our partner case companies within the confines of the research project. As a result 10 master thesis within sustainable procurement and supply management was developed.

COLLABORATION WITH CASE COMPANIES

In the strategic research initiative, we collaborate with a range of different case companies from different industries to develop new knowledge on the transitioning towards sustainable procurement.

Together with the case companies, we map the status in their journey towards sustainable procurement. We then develop a plan for how the strategic research initiative can help develop and share knowledge that can strengthen the transitioning towards sustainable procurement in the company and the supply network.

A collaboration agreement is signed with the company. Among other aspects, the collaboration agreement provided details on data-collection, anonymity, resource usage and opportunities for data collection and sharing.

As the transitioning towards sustainable procurement is a long term endeavor, we aim to develop long term relationships with the case companies. Thus, we see our relationships with the involved case companies as partnerships that helps us build a knowledge developing and knowledge sharing community around the important subject “Sustainable procurement and supply management”.

Below is the list of the companies with which we have currently signed collaboration agreements. On top of this a range of other companies have shown interest in our strategic research initiative, participated in our workshops, and are currently pending as partners in the project. A total of 16 different companies from 11 different industries have participated in our activities so far.

List of core company partners (in alphabetical order) in the strategic research initiative “Transitioning towards sustainable procurement”:

  • CO-RO
  • COWI
  • Elis
  • Leo Pharma
  • Mærsk
  • Nordea
  • Novozymes
  • Ørsted

Bæredygtige supply chains: Den udvidede og komplekse styringsopgave

Authors: Kim Sundtoft Hald

Authors: Kim Sundtoft Hald & Thomas Johnsen
