Department of Operations Management invited by the Arctic Economic Council (AEC) to discuss commercial opportunities in the Arctic

On March 25th, Department of Operations Management (OM) participated in an expert workshop invited by the Arctic Economic Council (AEC) and Danish Shipping (DS). The main question of the workshop was how universities and industry actors could collaborate further to expand the commercial opportunities in the Arctic. Researchers at OM has previously published reports on the economics of Arctic shipping, and OM remains one of the foremost university departments in Denmark when it comes to Arctic business research.

Department of Operations Management and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) has already developed a maritime research collaboration blueprint, and during the workshop it was clear that there was international interest in such a blueprint. “The core question of the AEC – how to foster more interaction between research and industry – is something that we have already worked with and it was easy for us simply to join forces with our partners at DTU and present our insights to the AEC Chair” says Christian Hendriksen, one of the researchers on the project and authors of the reports in the project. “As the climate and the global economy changes, new areas of research and business are opening up as we speak in the Arctic region, and OM is well-positioned in a strong collaboration between universities and industry partners  that  can provide relevant Arctic research to industry actors and drive a strong research ambition in this area.” says Carsten Ørts Hansen, Head of Department at OM

Besides OM and DTU, the workshop was attended by Copenhagen University, Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI), Confederation of Danish Industries (DI), Danish Shipping, and AEC governing board members from the Arctic countries, in addition to several representatives from individual firms.
